3. Setup and Initial Operation
3.1. Unpacking and Inspection
Upon receiving your watch, carefully remove it from its packaging. Inspect the watch for any visible damage. Ensure all protective films are removed from the crystal and caseback.
3.2. Winding the Watch
Your Graf Zeppelin LZ129 Hindenburg watch is equipped with an automatic mechanical movement. It is powered by the motion of your wrist. If the watch has stopped or its power reserve is low, it can be manually wound:
- Ensure the crown is in its normal, pushed-in position (Position 0).
- Rotate the crown clockwise approximately 30-40 times. This will initiate the movement and build up a sufficient power reserve.
- The power reserve indicator will show the increasing power. A full wind typically provides a power reserve of approximately 40 hours.
Once worn, the automatic rotor will continue to wind the watch with your natural wrist movements.
3.3. Setting the Time
- Pull the crown out to Position 2 (the outermost position). The second hand will stop.
- Rotate the crown to move the hour and minute hands clockwise until the desired time is set. When setting the time, ensure the 24-hour subdial also reflects the correct AM/PM period.
- Once the time is set, push the crown back into Position 0. The second hand will resume movement.
3.4. Setting the Date
The date can be set independently:
- Pull the crown out to Position 1 (the middle position).
- Rotate the crown counter-clockwise to advance the date.
- Set the date to the day before the current date.
- Pull the crown out to Position 2 and advance the time past 12 AM (midnight) to change the date to the current date. Continue setting the correct time. This ensures the date changes at midnight, not noon.
- Push the crown back into Position 0.
Important: Avoid setting the date between 9 PM and 3 AM, as this can damage the movement's date mechanism. If you need to set the date during this period, first set the time outside this range, then adjust the date, and finally reset the time.
4. Operating the Watch
4.1. Automatic Movement
The watch is powered by an automatic mechanical movement. This means it winds itself through the natural motion of your wrist. When fully wound, the watch has a power reserve that allows it to run for an extended period (approximately 40 hours) even when not being worn. If the watch is not worn for several days, it may stop and require manual winding as described in Section 3.2.

4.2. Power Reserve Indicator
The subdial located at the 12 o'clock position indicates the remaining power reserve. The hand will move from 'MIN' (minimum) to '40' (maximum hours) as the watch is wound. Keep an eye on this indicator to ensure your watch remains sufficiently wound.
4.3. 24-Hour Subdial
The subdial at the 6 o'clock position displays time in a 24-hour format. This subdial synchronizes with the main hour hand and helps to distinguish between AM and PM hours, which is particularly useful when setting the date.
5. Maintenance and Care
5.1. Cleaning
- Wipe the watch case and crystal with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth regularly to remove dust and fingerprints.
- For the leather strap, avoid prolonged exposure to water, direct sunlight, and harsh chemicals. Clean with a specialized leather cleaner if necessary, following the product instructions.
5.2. Water Resistance
While your watch may offer some level of water resistance, it is generally recommended to avoid direct contact with water, especially for watches with leather straps. Do not operate the crown or pushers when the watch is wet. Consult the watch's specific water resistance rating (if available) for detailed guidelines. Without a specific rating, treat the watch as splash-resistant only.
5.3. Crystal Care
The watch features a Hesalite (plastic) crystal. While durable, Hesalite can be prone to minor scratches. These can often be polished out using a specialized plastic crystal polish. Avoid abrasive materials when cleaning the crystal.
5.4. Storage
When not wearing your watch, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and strong magnetic fields. A watch winder can be used to keep the automatic movement running if you do not wear it daily.
5.5. Professional Service
For optimal performance and longevity, it is recommended to have your mechanical watch serviced by a qualified watchmaker every 3-5 years. This includes cleaning, lubrication, and adjustment of the movement.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Watch has stopped or runs intermittently. | Insufficient power reserve. | Manually wind the watch by rotating the crown clockwise 30-40 times (Section 3.2). Wear the watch regularly to allow the automatic movement to wind. |
| Time is incorrect. | Time was not set correctly or watch stopped. | Reset the time as described in Section 3.3. Ensure the watch is sufficiently wound. |
| Date is incorrect or changes at noon. | Date was not set correctly, or set during restricted hours. | Reset the date and time carefully, following the instructions in Section 3.4, paying attention to the 9 PM - 3 AM restriction. |
| Condensation under the crystal. | Moisture ingress. | This indicates a potential issue with water resistance. Seek professional service immediately to prevent damage to the movement. |
