Introduction

1. Setup

1.1 Unpacking and Checking Contents

Carefully unpack your camera and ensure all components are present. The package typically includes the camera body only.

1.2 Attaching the Lens

The OM-D E-M5 uses a Micro Four Thirds mount. To attach a lens:

1. Remove the body cap from the camera and the rear cap from the lens.
2. Align the mounting marks on the lens with the mounting mark on the camera body.
3. Rotate the lens clockwise until it clicks into place.

1.3 Inserting the Battery

The camera uses a Lithium-ion battery. To insert the battery:

1. Open the battery compartment cover located on the bottom of the camera.
2. Insert the battery with the correct orientation, ensuring the contacts align.
3. Close the battery compartment cover until it locks securely.

1.4 Inserting a Memory Card

The camera supports SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards. To insert a memory card:

1. Open the memory card slot cover, usually located on the side or bottom of the camera.
2. Insert the memory card with the label facing the correct direction until it clicks into place.
3. Close the memory card slot cover.

2. Operating the Camera

2.1 Power On/Off

Locate the power switch on the camera body. Slide it to the 'ON' position to power on the camera and to 'OFF' to power it down.

2.2 Basic Shooting Modes

The mode dial on the top of the camera allows you to select various shooting modes:

• iAUTO: Intelligent Auto mode for automatic settings.
• P (Program Auto): Camera sets aperture and shutter speed, but you can shift the program.
• A (Aperture Priority): You set the aperture, camera sets shutter speed.
• S (Shutter Priority): You set the shutter speed, camera sets aperture.
• M (Manual): You control both aperture and shutter speed.
• SCN (Scene Modes): Pre-set modes for specific situations (e.g., Portrait, Landscape).
• ART (Art Filters): Apply creative filters to your photos.

2.3 Using the Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) and Tilting OLED Touchscreen

The camera features a high-resolution 1.4 million dot EVF with a 120 fps refresh rate, offering a 100% accurate view. The 3-inch 610,000 dot tilting OLED touchscreen provides flexibility for shooting from various angles and intuitive control.

2.4 Autofocus System

The OM-D E-M5 boasts a fast autofocus system utilizing contrast detection with 35 autofocus points. It supports various AF technologies including Continuous, Face Detection, Live View, Multi-area, Selective single-point, Single, and Tracking.

2.5 Image Stabilization

The camera incorporates a 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization system, which effectively compensates for camera shake across five axes (yaw, pitch, roll, and horizontal/vertical shift). This allows for sharper images, especially in low-light conditions or when using slower shutter speeds.

2.6 Connectivity (Wi-Fi)

The OM-D E-M5 supports EyeFi wireless technology. You can connect your camera to a smartphone using the OLYMPUS Image Share application for remote control and easy photo transfer.
