5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Powering On/Off
Press the POWER button to turn the thermometer on. Press and hold the POWER button again to turn it off.
5.2 Taking Temperature Readings
Once powered on, immerse the platinum probe into the substance or environment you wish to measure. The temperature reading will be displayed on the LCD screen. Allow a few moments for the reading to stabilize.
5.3 Min/Max Memory Function
The thermometer records the minimum and maximum temperatures detected since the last reset. To view these values, press the MIN/MAX button. Pressing it repeatedly will cycle through minimum, maximum, and current readings. To clear the memory, consult the specific instructions on the device or hold the MIN/MAX button for a few seconds.
5.4 Hold Feature
To freeze the current temperature reading on the display, press the HOLD button. This allows you to record the reading without the value changing. Press HOLD again to resume live temperature monitoring.
5.5 Data Transfer (RS 232)
The thermometer is equipped with an RS-232 interface for transferring data to a personal computer. Connect the provided RS-232 serial cord to the thermometer and your PC. Specific software or drivers may be required for data acquisition; refer to the manufacturer's website or included software for detailed instructions on data logging.

6.1 Cleaning
Clean the thermometer's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. The platinum probe can be cleaned with appropriate laboratory cleaning solutions, ensuring it is thoroughly rinsed and dried afterward.
6.2 Storage
When not in use, store the thermometer and probe in a clean, dry environment at room temperature. Protect the probe from physical damage.
6.3 Calibration
This thermometer is traceable to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards and calibrated to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 17025 levels. Regular recalibration may be required depending on your application and quality system requirements. Refer to your organization's calibration schedule or contact Thomas Scientific for recalibration services.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your thermometer, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- No Display: Check if the 9V battery is correctly installed and has sufficient charge. Replace the battery if necessary.
- Inaccurate Readings: Ensure the probe is fully immersed and has reached thermal equilibrium with the substance being measured. Verify the probe connection is secure. If issues persist, recalibration may be needed.
- Data Transfer Issues: Confirm the RS-232 cable is properly connected to both the thermometer and the PC. Ensure the correct software and drivers are installed on your computer.
- Erratic Readings: Check for any physical damage to the probe or cable. Avoid strong electromagnetic interference.
