1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX66 digital camera. The DSC-TX66 features an 18.2 MP Exmor R CMOS sensor, 5x optical zoom, and a 3.3-inch OLED touchscreen. Its compact design allows for easy portability and use.

2. Setup

2.1 Charging the Battery

The camera uses a Lithium Ion battery. Ensure the battery is fully charged before initial use. Connect the camera to a power source using the supplied USB cable and AC adapter. The charging indicator will illuminate during charging and turn off when complete.

2.2 Inserting a Memory Card

The camera supports Memory Stick Duo/Pro Duo/Pro-HG Duo and microSD/microSDHC memory cards. Open the battery/memory card cover and insert the memory card with the contacts facing the correct direction until it clicks into place. Close the cover securely.

2.3 Initial Settings

Upon first power-on, the camera will prompt you to set the date, time, and language. Follow the on-screen instructions on the 3.3-inch OLED touchscreen to configure these settings.

3. Operating the Camera

3.1 Powering On/Off

To power on the camera, slide down the front cover. The lens will extend, and the screen will activate. To power off, slide the front cover back up to conceal the lens.

3.2 Taking Photos

  1. Hold the Camera: Grip the camera firmly, ensuring fingers do not obstruct the lens or flash.
  2. Frame Your Shot: Use the 3.3-inch OLED touchscreen to compose your image.
  3. Focus: The camera features High Speed AF for quick and accurate focusing. You can also use touch focus by tapping on the desired area on the screen.
  4. Zoom: Use the zoom lever to adjust the 5x optical zoom. Clear Image Zoom can extend this further without significant loss of quality.
  5. Capture: Press the shutter button halfway to focus, then fully to take the picture.

3.3 Advanced Shooting Modes and Features

  • Superior Auto Mode: Automatically detects up to 36 scenes for still images and movies, optimizing settings for clarity and dynamic range.
  • 3D Still Image & 3D Sweep Panorama: Capture images with a three-dimensional effect for viewing on compatible 3D displays.
  • Picture Effect: Apply various creative effects to photos, such as Toy Camera, Pop Color, Posterization, and more.
  • Photo Creativity: Adjust brightness, color, and vividness in real-time on the monitor before shooting.
  • Background Defocus: Creates a blurred background effect, similar to DSLR cameras, emphasizing the subject.
  • Face Detection: Detects up to eight faces and adjusts focus, exposure, and white balance.
  • Smile Shutter: Automatically captures a photo when a smile is detected.
  • Anti-Blink Function: Helps prevent photos with subjects blinking by capturing multiple images and selecting the best one.
  • Soft Skin Mode: Reduces the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles in portraits.
  • Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN): Automatically selects appropriate camera settings for 36 different scene types.
  • Natural Flash: Corrects color for more lifelike images when using flash.
  • Motion Detection: Adjusts ISO sensitivity and shutter speed to reduce blur in moving subjects.

3.4 Recording Videos

The DSC-TX66 can record Full HD 1080/60i videos in AVCHD format. Press the dedicated movie button to start and stop recording. Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode helps stabilize footage, even while walking. The camera also supports dual recording of stills and movies simultaneously.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning the Camera

  • Lens: Use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for camera lenses. Avoid touching the lens directly with fingers.
  • Screen: Gently wipe the OLED touchscreen with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
  • Body: Wipe the camera body with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water.

4.2 Battery Care

To prolong battery life, avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when not in use. If the camera will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery.

4.3 Storage

Store the camera in a protective case to prevent scratches and damage. Avoid storing it in dusty or humid environments.

5. Troubleshooting

  • Camera does not power on: Ensure the battery is charged and correctly inserted.
  • Cannot take pictures: Check if a memory card is inserted and has sufficient free space. Ensure the lens cover is fully open.
  • Images are blurry: Verify that the camera is focusing correctly. Check for smudges on the lens. Ensure Optical SteadyShot is active, especially in low light or when zooming.
  • Screen is blank or unresponsive: Power cycle the camera. If the issue persists, contact customer support.
  • Battery drains quickly: Reduce screen brightness, limit flash usage, and turn off the camera when not in use.
