5. Operating the Machine
5.1 Stitch Selection
Turn the stitch selector dial to choose one of the 22 available stitches. Refer to the stitch chart on the machine for visual guidance.
5.2 Adjusting Stitch Length and Width
Use the stitch length and width adjustment dials to fine-tune your chosen stitch. Shorter lengths create denser stitches, while longer lengths create looser stitches. Stitch width applies to zigzag and decorative stitches.
5.3 Adjusting Thread Tension
The upper thread tension dial controls the tightness of the upper thread. Adjust this dial to achieve balanced stitches where the upper and lower threads interlock evenly between the fabric layers. A common setting is usually between 3 and 5.
5.4 Basic Sewing
- Place your fabric under the presser foot.
- Lower the presser foot lever.
- Turn the handwheel towards you to bring the needle down into the fabric, then up again, pulling the bobbin thread through the needle plate hole.
- Pull both upper and bobbin threads to the back under the presser foot.
- Gently press the foot controller to start sewing. Guide the fabric smoothly.
- To reinforce a seam, press the reverse lever at the beginning and end of your stitching.
- When finished, raise the needle to its highest position, lift the presser foot, and pull the fabric away. Cut the threads using the thread cutter or scissors.
5.5 Using Presser Feet
The machine comes with 4 presser feet for various tasks. To change a presser foot, raise the presser foot lever, press the release button at the back of the foot holder, and snap the new foot into place.
5.6 Creating Buttonholes
Select the 1-step buttonhole stitch. Attach the buttonhole foot and follow the markings on the foot to align with your fabric. The machine will automatically sew the buttonhole to the size of the button placed in the foot.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
Regular cleaning helps maintain machine performance. Always unplug the machine before cleaning.
- Lint Removal: Use a small brush to remove lint and dust from the bobbin area and feed dogs.
- Machine Surface: Wipe the exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals.
6.2 Needle Replacement
Replace the needle regularly, especially after 8-10 hours of sewing or if it becomes bent or dull. A dull needle can cause skipped stitches or fabric damage.
- Unplug the machine.
- Loosen the needle clamp screw.
- Remove the old needle.
- Insert a new needle with the flat side facing the back, pushing it up as far as it will go.
- Tighten the needle clamp screw securely.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your sewing machine, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Skipped Stitches | Incorrect needle, bent needle, improper threading. | Replace needle with correct type/size, re-thread machine correctly. |
| Thread Breakage (Upper) | Incorrect threading, tension too tight, damaged needle, poor quality thread. | Re-thread machine, adjust tension, replace needle, use good quality thread. |
| Thread Breakage (Bobbin) | Improperly wound bobbin, incorrect bobbin insertion, lint in bobbin case. | Re-wind bobbin evenly, re-insert bobbin correctly, clean bobbin case. |
| Fabric Not Feeding | Feed dogs lowered, lint under needle plate, presser foot pressure too low. | Raise feed dogs, clean under needle plate, adjust presser foot pressure. |
| Machine Jams | Thread tangled in bobbin area, incorrect threading. | Remove fabric and threads, clean bobbin area, re-thread carefully. |
