Woodstock D4151 110/220-Volt Paddle Switch Instruction Manual
Model: D4151
Introduction

Image: The Woodstock D4151 110/220-Volt Paddle Switch, featuring a large red stop paddle and a green start button.
The Woodstock D4151 Paddle Switch is a dual-voltage, single-phase electrical switch designed for controlling stationary power tools. It is rated for 110-Volt, 2 Horsepower motors up to 35-Amp and 220-Volt, 3 Horsepower motors up to 20-Amp. Its large paddle design facilitates quick emergency shut-offs, enhancing user safety during operation.
Important Safety Information
WARNING: Electrical work should only be performed by qualified personnel. Always disconnect power at the source before installation or maintenance.
- Ensure the switch's voltage and amperage ratings match or exceed your motor's requirements.
- Proper grounding is essential for safe operation.
- This switch is designed for emergency shut-off via the large paddle.
- The D4151 is not a safety switch that automatically turns off when power is cut. If power is interrupted and then restored, the connected tool will restart if the switch was in the "ON" position. Always ensure the switch is in the "OFF" position before restoring power.
- The start button is recessed to prevent accidental activation.
Key Features
- Dual Voltage Rating: Suitable for 110-Volt (up to 2 HP, 35 Amps) and 220-Volt (up to 3 HP, 20 Amps) motors.
- Emergency Shut-off Paddle: Large, red paddle for quick and easy stopping of equipment.
- Recessed Start Button: Prevents unintentional activation.
- Durable Construction: Made from hard plastic for robust performance.
- Padlock Compatibility: Features a 3/16" padlock shaft size for securing the switch in the OFF position.
Setup and Installation
The D4151 paddle switch is designed for panel mounting and requires a suitable electrical box for installation. Due to its depth, a deep electrical box (minimum 2 1/8 inches) is recommended. The switch is compatible with standard electrical boxes, but the mounting screws may require replacement with SAE threads for typical American junction boxes, or reaming of existing holes.
Mounting
Mount the switch into a metal electrical box. Ensure the box is adequately deep to accommodate the switch's dimensions. If using a standard American junction box, you may need to replace the provided metric screws with SAE screws or modify the box's mounting holes to ensure a secure fit. A riser plate can be used with a 4" x 4" x 2 1/8" deep box for optimal assembly.
Wiring
The switch terminals are marked for "LINE" (incoming power) and "LOAD" (outgoing power to the motor). Wiring diagrams are typically molded into the back of the switch. Use appropriate crimp connectors for secure wire connections. Wire size should be no less than 14 AWG, with 12 AWG recommended for optimal performance and safety. Ensure all connections are tight and properly insulated.
Grounding: Always ground the electrical box and the switch to the tool's chassis for maximum safety. Use strain relief connectors for wires entering and exiting the box.

Operating Instructions
To operate the Woodstock D4151 Paddle Switch:
- To Start: Press the green "START" button. This button is recessed to prevent accidental activation.
- To Stop: Press the large red "STOP" paddle. This paddle is designed for quick and easy shut-off, even in emergency situations, and can be activated with a hand, knee, or other body part.
- Safety Lockout: A padlock can be inserted through the designated shaft (3/16" size) to prevent the switch from being turned on, providing an additional layer of safety during maintenance or when the tool is unattended.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your D4151 Paddle Switch:
- Inspection: Periodically inspect the switch for any signs of physical damage, wear, or loose connections.
- Cleaning: Keep the switch free from dust, sawdust, and debris. Use a dry cloth or compressed air for cleaning. Do not use liquids.
- Terminal Check: Ensure all wire terminals remain tight. Loose connections can lead to overheating and potential failure.
- Functionality Test: Regularly test the "START" and "STOP" functions to ensure they operate smoothly and effectively.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your D4151 Paddle Switch, consider the following:
- Switch Does Not Activate:
- Check power supply to the switch.
- Verify all wiring connections are secure (LINE and LOAD).
- Ensure the motor is not overloaded, which could trip a circuit breaker or internal protection.
- Switch Fails to Stop Tool:
- Inspect the stop paddle and internal mechanism for obstructions or damage.
- Ensure the internal stop button is not stuck or damaged.
- Tool Restarts After Power Interruption:
- This is expected behavior for this type of switch. It is not a safety switch that prevents restart after power loss. Always ensure the switch is in the "OFF" position before restoring power.
- Mounting Issues:
- If the switch does not fit standard electrical boxes, ensure you are using a deep enough box (minimum 2 1/8 inches).
- Metric mounting screws may need to be replaced with SAE screws for compatibility with some American junction boxes.
