Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your KOSHIN SEV-50X Petrol Water Pump. Koshin Ltd., founded in 1948 in Kyoto, Japan, is a renowned manufacturer known for high-quality and high-performance pumps. The SEV-50X is a self-priming 2-inch petrol engine pump designed for service water applications, capable of handling solid particles up to 3 mm.

Safety Information
Always prioritize safety when operating any machinery. Read and understand all safety warnings before use. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury or property damage.
- Fuel Handling: Petrol is highly flammable. Always refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine off and cool. Do not smoke or allow open flames near the pump.
- Exhaust Fumes: The engine produces carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. Operate the pump only in open, well-ventilated areas. Never operate indoors.
- Hot Surfaces: The engine and pump components become very hot during operation. Avoid contact with hot surfaces to prevent burns. Allow the pump to cool before handling or servicing.
- Moving Parts: Keep hands, feet, and clothing away from moving parts such as the pull starter and any rotating components.
- Electrical Safety: While this is a petrol pump, ensure no electrical connections are exposed to water.
- Stable Placement: Always operate the pump on a stable, level surface to prevent tipping.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear appropriate PPE, including eye protection and gloves, when operating or servicing the pump.
Setup
- Unpacking and Inspection: Carefully remove the pump from its packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage. Ensure all standard accessories are present: 1 engine tool, 2 hose couplings, 3 hose clamps, and 1 filter (2-inch suction basket).
- Add Engine Oil: Locate the oil filling screw. Fill the engine with the recommended 4-stroke engine oil (refer to engine manual for specific type and quantity) until the correct level is reached. The pump features oil deficiency protection, which will prevent operation if oil is too low.
- Add Fuel: The pump operates on petrol. Locate the 3.6 L fuel tank. Fill the tank with fresh, clean petrol. Do not overfill. Securely close the fuel cap.
- Connect Hoses:
- Suction Hose: Attach a 2-inch suction hose to the suction connection of the pump using a hose coupling and clamp. Ensure the suction basket filter is attached to the end of the suction hose that will be submerged in the water source. Ensure all connections are airtight to prevent air leaks, which can affect priming.
- Discharge Hose: Attach a 2-inch discharge hose to the pressure connection of the pump using a hose coupling and clamp. Direct the discharge hose to where the water needs to be moved.
- Prime the Pump: The SEV-50X is a self-priming pump, but it requires initial priming. Locate the water filling nozzle on the pump casing. Remove the cap and fill the pump casing completely with water before starting the engine. Replace the cap securely.
- Placement: Place the pump on a firm, level surface near the water source. Ensure the suction height does not exceed 8 meters for optimal performance.

Operation
- Pre-Start Checks: Before each use, verify engine oil level, fuel level, and ensure all hose connections are secure and airtight. Confirm the pump casing is filled with water for priming.
- Starting the Engine:
- Open the fuel valve (if applicable).
- Set the choke lever to the "CHOKE" position (for cold starts).
- Set the engine switch to "ON".
- Pull the starter rope firmly and smoothly until the engine starts.
- Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke lever to the "RUN" position.
- Pumping Operation: Once the engine is running, the pump will begin to draw water. Monitor the flow rate and ensure consistent operation. The pump has an operating time of approximately 2 hours on a full 3.6 L tank.
- Shutting Down:
- If possible, allow the engine to idle for a few minutes to cool down.
- Set the engine switch to "OFF".
- Close the fuel valve (if applicable).
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your KOSHIN SEV-50X pump.
- After Each Use:
- Drain any remaining water from the pump casing using the water drain screw to prevent freezing or corrosion.
- Clean the suction basket filter to ensure unrestricted water flow.
- Wipe down the exterior of the pump to remove dirt and debris.
- Engine Oil: Check the engine oil level before each use. Change the engine oil according to the engine manufacturer's recommendations (typically after the first 20 hours, then every 50-100 hours of operation).
- Air Filter: Inspect and clean the air filter regularly. Replace if damaged.
- Spark Plug: Inspect the spark plug periodically and clean or replace as needed.
- Fuel System: If storing the pump for an extended period, drain the fuel tank and carburetor to prevent fuel degradation issues.
- General Inspection: Periodically check all nuts, bolts, and fasteners for tightness. Inspect hoses for cracks or wear.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Engine does not start | No fuel; Engine switch OFF; Low oil level; Choke incorrect; Fouled spark plug | Add fuel; Turn switch ON; Add oil; Adjust choke; Clean/replace spark plug |
| Pump does not prime / No water flow | Pump casing not filled; Air leak in suction hose; Suction hose clogged; Suction height too high | Fill pump casing; Check/tighten all suction connections; Clear obstruction; Reduce suction height (max 8m) |
| Low water flow / Low pressure | Clogged filter; Partial air leak; Worn impeller/seals | Clean filter; Check all connections; Contact service for inspection |
| Excessive vibration | Unstable surface; Loose components | Place on level surface; Check and tighten all fasteners |
