Nikon D800E 36.3 MP FX-Format Digital SLR Camera Instruction Manual

Model: D800E

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your Nikon D800E 36.3 MP FX-Format Digital SLR Camera. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the camera to ensure proper operation and to maximize its performance.

The Nikon D800E is a specialized digital SLR camera designed for exceptional image definition. It features a 36.3-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor and an optical low-pass filter (OLPF) without anti-aliasing properties. This design choice prioritizes maximum sharpness and resolution, making it particularly suitable for studio and still-life photography professionals who can manage potential moiré and false color artifacts through controlled shooting conditions and post-processing.

Aside from the OLPF characteristic, the D800E shares identical performance aspects with the standard D800 model, including focus speed, exposure metering, shooting speed, movie recording capabilities, accessory compatibility, and control layout.

2.2. Inserting the Battery

The D800E uses a Lithium-Ion battery. Open the battery chamber cover located at the bottom of the camera. Insert the battery with the contacts facing the correct direction, then close the cover until it latches securely. Ensure the battery is fully charged before first use.

2.3. Inserting Memory Cards

The camera supports both CompactFlash (Type I) and SD/SDHC/SDXC UHS-I compliant memory cards. Open the memory card slot cover. Insert the cards into their respective slots until they click into place. Close the cover securely. It is recommended to format new memory cards in the camera before use.

4. Maintenance

4.1. Cleaning the Camera

Regularly clean the camera body with a soft, dry cloth. For the lens and sensor, use specialized cleaning tools and solutions designed for optical equipment. Avoid touching the sensor directly. If dust or smudges persist on the sensor, consult a professional service center.

4.2. Battery Care

Store batteries in a cool, dry place. Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. If the camera will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery.

4.3. Storage

When not in use, store the camera in a dry, dust-free environment, preferably in a camera bag or case. Protect it from extreme temperatures and humidity.

5. Troubleshooting

  • Camera does not power on: Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly inserted. Check if the battery contacts are clean.
  • Images are blurry: Verify that the lens is properly attached and clean. Check focus settings and ensure sufficient light for autofocus. Consider using a tripod in low light.
  • Moiré or false color in images: The D800E's design, lacking an anti-aliasing filter, can increase the possibility of moiré and false color, especially with repetitive fine patterns. Adjust shooting distance, angle, or aperture. Post-processing software can also help mitigate these effects.
  • Memory card error: Ensure the memory card is correctly inserted and not full. Try formatting the card (this will erase all data). If the issue persists, try a different memory card.
  • Flash does not fire: Check flash mode settings. Ensure the flash is not disabled or in a mode that prevents firing (e.g., silent mode).
