Safety Instructions
- Do not open the UPS casing. There are no user-serviceable parts inside.
- Ensure proper ventilation around the UPS. Do not block ventilation openings.
- Connect the UPS to a grounded power outlet.
- Avoid placing the UPS in direct sunlight, near heat sources, or in excessively humid environments.
- Disconnect the UPS from the power supply before cleaning.
Setup
1. Unpacking
Carefully remove the UPS from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage. Retain the packaging for future transport or storage.
2. Placement
Place the UPS on a stable, flat surface. Ensure adequate clearance for airflow around the unit. The compact design allows for discreet placement.
3. Connecting to Power
- Connect the UPS power cord to a grounded wall outlet.
- Allow the UPS to charge for at least 8 hours before initial use to ensure full battery capacity.
4. Connecting Devices
The Eaton Ellipse ECO 1200 USB FR features 8 FR outlets. Some outlets provide battery backup and surge protection, while others offer surge protection only. Refer to the labels on the unit for specific outlet types.
- Connect critical equipment (e.g., computer, monitor, network devices) to the battery-backed outlets.
- Connect non-critical equipment (e.g., printer, scanner) to the surge-protected-only outlets.
5. USB Connection and Software Installation
Connect the supplied USB cable from the UPS to your computer. For advanced monitoring and management features, install the Eaton UPS Companion software. This software allows you to:
- Monitor UPS status, battery charge, and load.
- Configure automatic shutdown of your computer during extended power outages.
- Utilize EcoControl features to save energy by automatically shutting down peripherals when the main device is off.
Note on Software Installation: Some users have reported issues with the UPS Companion software installation. If you encounter problems, try running the installer executable directly from your desktop. Ensure your operating system is up to date.
Operating the UPS
Powering On/Off
Press the power button on the front of the unit to turn the UPS on or off. The power indicator will illuminate when the unit is active.
Battery Backup Operation
In the event of a power outage, the UPS will automatically switch to battery power, providing continuous power to connected devices on battery-backed outlets. The UPS will emit an audible alarm to indicate it is operating on battery power. The frequency of the alarm will increase as the battery charge depletes, signaling an imminent shutdown.
EcoControl Feature
The EcoControl feature, managed via the UPS Companion software, allows the UPS to automatically power off peripherals connected to specific outlets when the main device (e.g., your computer) connected to a master outlet is turned off or enters a low-power state. This helps conserve energy.
Maintenance
Battery Replacement
The UPS contains sealed lead-acid batteries that have a finite lifespan, typically several years. While batteries are replaceable, the process may be challenging. It is recommended to consult Eaton's official support resources or a qualified technician for battery replacement. Always use genuine Eaton replacement batteries to ensure compatibility and safety.
Cleaning
To clean the exterior of the UPS, use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Ensure the unit is disconnected from the power supply before cleaning.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| UPS does not turn on. | Not connected to AC power; Battery not charged. | Ensure the UPS is plugged into a live, grounded outlet. Allow batteries to charge for several hours. |
| UPS beeps continuously or frequently. | Operating on battery power; Overload; Battery low/faulty. | Check AC power. Reduce connected load. Check battery status via software or consider battery replacement if old. |
| UPS Companion software fails to install or connect. | Installation conflict; Driver issue. | Try running the installer from your desktop. Ensure USB cable is securely connected. Restart computer. Check Eaton's website for updated drivers or software versions. |
| Short battery runtime. | Overload; Old battery; Battery not fully charged. | Reduce connected load. Allow battery to fully charge. Consider battery replacement if the unit is several years old. |
