The CTP-2 preamp is designed for easy installation into Takamine guitars equipped with the "SoundChoice" docking port system. Ensure your guitar is compatible before attempting installation.
3.1 Installation
- Carefully remove the existing preamp module from your guitar's SoundChoice docking port.
- Align the CTP-2 preamp with the docking port and gently push it into place until it clicks securely.
- Connect the guitar's internal pickup (e.g., Palathetic pickup) to the designated input on the CTP-2.
- If using an auxiliary pickup, connect it to the AUX input jacks on the rear of the preamp.
3.2 Power Supply
The CTP-2 preamp is powered by batteries, typically located within the preamp module or a dedicated battery compartment in the guitar. Ensure fresh batteries are installed for optimal performance. The preamp features a BATT indicator LED that illuminates when battery power is low.
4. Operating Instructions
Familiarize yourself with the controls on the CTP-2 preamp to effectively shape your guitar's tone.
4.1 Controls and Functions
- COOL TUBE Knob (0-100%): This rotary knob controls the depth of effect the 12AU7 vacuum tube places on the signal. Turning it clockwise increases the tube's influence, adding harmonic density, fatter lows, and rounder highs, providing a richer tone suitable for various playing styles, including fingerstyle.
- MID FREQ Knob (200Hz - 8.5KHz): This rotary knob selects the specific frequency point for the Mid slider.
- LOW Slider (-12 to +12): Adjusts the bass frequencies of your sound. Slide up to boost, down to cut.
- MID Slider (-12 to +12): Adjusts the midrange frequencies. The specific frequency affected is determined by the MID FREQ knob. Slide up to boost, down to cut.
- HIGH Slider (-12 to +12): Adjusts the treble frequencies of your sound. Slide up to boost, down to cut.
- VOLUME Slider: Controls the overall output level of the preamp.
- AUX PU Knob (0-10): Controls the blend level of an auxiliary pickup connected to the rear AUX input.
- TUNER Button: Activates the built-in chromatic tuner.
- CALIB. Button: Used to calibrate the tuner's reference pitch.
4.2 Using the Tuner
Press the TUNER button to engage the chromatic tuner. An LED display will reveal the note being played. Illuminated arrows will indicate if the note is sharp or flat, guiding you to the correct pitch. The tuner automatically mutes the output signal when active.
5. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your CTP-2 preamp.
5.1 Cleaning
Wipe the preamp's surface with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the finish or electronic components.
5.2 Battery Replacement
When the BATT indicator LED illuminates, it's time to replace the batteries. Refer to your guitar's manual for the specific battery type and replacement procedure. Always use fresh, high-quality batteries.
5.3 Vacuum Tube Replacement
The 12AU7 vacuum tube has a finite lifespan. If you notice a degradation in tone, increased noise, or the preamp fails to power on, the tube may need replacement. This procedure should ideally be performed by a qualified technician to avoid damage to the preamp or injury. Use only genuine Takamine replacement tubes or approved equivalents.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your CTP-2 preamp, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- No Sound Output:
- Check battery level; replace if low.
- Ensure all cables (guitar to amp, pickup to preamp) are securely connected.
- Verify the VOLUME slider is not at minimum.
- Ensure the tuner is not active (it mutes output).
- Poor Sound Quality (Distortion, Weak Signal):
- Check battery level.
- Inspect the 12AU7 vacuum tube for proper seating or signs of failure (e.g., dim glow, rattling). Consider professional tube replacement.
- Adjust the COOL TUBE knob; excessive settings might introduce unwanted distortion.
- Ensure the guitar's pickup is functioning correctly.
- Tuner Not Responding:
- Ensure the TUNER button is pressed firmly.
- Check battery level.
- Ensure the guitar's output is not muted by other effects or pedals.
If problems persist after attempting these solutions, contact Takamine customer support or a qualified service technician.
