Introduction

The Nikon D5100 is a 16.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS Digital SLR camera designed for both photography and video enthusiasts. It features a 3-inch Vari-Angle LCD monitor, full HD movie capabilities, and various in-camera special effects modes. Powered by the EXPEED 2 image processing engine, the D5100 delivers high-quality images with excellent dynamic range and performance for everyday shooting.

Setup

1. Battery Installation

The Nikon D5100 uses a rechargeable Li-ion battery (EN-EL14). To install the battery:

  1. Locate the battery chamber cover on the bottom of the camera.
  2. Slide the battery chamber cover latch to open the cover.
  3. Insert the EN-EL14 battery into the chamber with the contacts facing the correct direction, as indicated by the diagram inside the chamber.
  4. Gently push the battery until it clicks into place.
  5. Close the battery chamber cover and slide the latch back to secure it.

2. Memory Card Insertion

The camera supports SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards. To insert a memory card:

  1. Open the memory card slot cover on the side of the camera.
  2. Insert the memory card into the slot with the label facing the back of the camera, until it clicks into place.
  3. Close the memory card slot cover.

3. Lens Attachment

The D5100 is compatible with a wide range of AF-S and AF-I NIKKOR lenses. To attach a lens:

  1. Remove the body cap from the camera and the rear lens cap from the lens.
  2. Align the mounting mark on the lens with the mounting mark on the camera body.
  3. Rotate the lens counter-clockwise until it clicks into place.

Operating the Camera

1. Power On/Off

To turn the camera on or off, rotate the power switch located around the shutter-release button.

2. Vari-Angle LCD Monitor

The 3-inch, 921,000-dot Vari-Angle LCD monitor can be rotated and tilted to various positions, allowing for flexible shooting angles, including low-angle shots, overhead shots, and self-portraits. This feature is particularly useful for live view shooting and video recording.

4. HD Movie Recording

The D5100 can record stunning Full 1080p HD movies with full-time autofocus. To start recording, press the dedicated movie-record button. The camera also supports external stereo microphones for enhanced audio quality.

5. Autofocus System

The camera features an 11-point AF system that provides precise focus, even when subjects are off-center. Combined with the Scene Recognition System, it can track moving subjects effectively using Nikon’s 3D-tracking technology.

6. HDR (High Dynamic Range)

For scenes with high contrast, the HDR setting combines two exposures to create an image with a wider dynamic range, preserving detail in both highlights and shadows.
