Setup
Hydration Reservoir Preparation
- Remove Reservoir: Carefully pull the hydration reservoir out of its dedicated compartment, usually located at the back of the main compartment.
- Fill Reservoir: Open the reservoir's fill port (typically a large screw cap or slide closure). Fill with clean water. Do not overfill.
- Secure Closure: Ensure the fill port is securely closed to prevent leaks.
- Insert Reservoir: Slide the filled reservoir back into its compartment.
- Route Tube: Thread the hydration tube through one of the designated tube exits (top left or right) and along a shoulder strap. Secure the bite valve to the chest strap or a convenient location for easy access.
Backpack Adjustment
- Shoulder Straps: Loosen all straps. Put on the backpack. Adjust the shoulder straps so the pack sits comfortably on your back, with the weight distributed evenly.
- Hip Belt: If equipped, fasten the hip belt around your hips. Tighten it so that a significant portion of the pack's weight rests on your hips, not just your shoulders.
- Chest Strap: Fasten the chest strap across your sternum. Adjust its height and tension for comfort and to stabilize the shoulder straps.
- Compression Straps: Use the side compression straps to cinch down the load and prevent shifting, especially if the pack is not full.
Operating Instructions
Using the Hydration System
- Bite Valve: To drink, gently bite down on the bite valve and suck.
- Shut-off Valve: Many Camelbak reservoirs have a shut-off valve near the bite valve. Ensure it is in the "open" position before drinking and "closed" when not in use to prevent leaks.
- Refilling: Refill the reservoir as needed, following the steps in the "Setup" section.
Packing the Backpack
Utilize the various compartments for organized storage. Place heavier items closer to your back and centered for better balance. Use the internal compression straps to secure contents.
MOLLE Webbing
The external MOLLE webbing allows for attachment of compatible pouches and accessories, expanding the pack's carrying capacity and customization options.
Maintenance
Cleaning the Hydration Reservoir
- Empty and Rinse: After each use, empty any remaining water and rinse the reservoir thoroughly with warm water.
- Clean with Soap: For a deeper clean, use mild soap and water. Camelbak offers cleaning kits with brushes for the reservoir and tube.
- Dry Completely: It is crucial to dry the reservoir completely to prevent mold and mildew. Use a reservoir dryer or hang it upside down with the opening propped open.
- Tube Cleaning: Flush the tube with clean water. If necessary, use a small brush designed for hydration tubes.
Cleaning the Backpack
- Spot Clean: For minor dirt, use a damp cloth and mild soap to spot clean the nylon fabric.
- Hand Wash: For a more thorough clean, hand wash the backpack in a tub with cool water and mild detergent. Do not use bleach or harsh chemicals.
- Air Dry: Hang the backpack to air dry completely, away from direct sunlight or heat. Do not machine wash or tumble dry.
Storage
Store the backpack in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Ensure both the pack and reservoir are completely dry before storage.
Troubleshooting
Leaking Hydration Reservoir
- Check Cap/Closure: Ensure the fill port is securely tightened or the slide closure is fully engaged.
- Bite Valve: Verify the bite valve is not damaged and the shut-off valve (if present) is fully closed when not in use.
- Tube Connection: Check that the tube is securely connected to the reservoir.
Difficulty Drinking from Bite Valve
- Shut-off Valve: Ensure the shut-off valve is in the "open" position.
- Air Lock: Sometimes an air bubble can get trapped. Try re-positioning the reservoir or gently squeezing it.
- Kinked Tube: Check for any kinks in the hydration tube.
Backpack Discomfort
- Adjust Straps: Re-adjust shoulder, hip, and chest straps to ensure proper weight distribution.
- Load Distribution: Repack the backpack, placing heavier items closer to your back and centered.
- Overloading: Ensure you are not exceeding the recommended cargo capacity.
