Introduction

The Lithonia Lighting EI500 M12 Emergency Ballast is designed to provide emergency power to fluorescent fixtures. This low-profile battery pack ensures 90 minutes of emergency illumination for one 2-foot or 4-foot linear, or U-shaped T8 or T12 fluorescent lamp in the event of a power outage. It is compatible with electronic T8 and magnetic T12, instant-start, rapid-start, and slimline ballasts.

Setup and Installation

The EI500 M12 is designed for easy installation within a fluorescent fixture's wiring compartment or on top of the fixture. It is suitable for troffer installations and can be installed in sealed and gasketed fixtures.

1. Disconnect Power: Before starting any work, ensure that all power to the fixture is disconnected at the circuit breaker.
2. Mounting: Mount the emergency ballast unit securely within the fixture's wiring compartment or on the fixture housing using the provided mounting hardware. The compact housing facilitates installation in various fixture types.
3. Wiring Connections:
   • Connect the dual voltage input (120V or 277V) wires from the building's AC supply to the appropriate ballast input leads.
   • Connect the output wires from the emergency ballast to the designated fluorescent lamp. This unit operates one lamp in emergency mode.
   • Connect the battery leads last, ensuring correct polarity.
   • Refer to the detailed wiring diagram included with the product for specific connections.
4. Test Switch Installation: Install the integrated test switch/pilot light assembly. This requires only one hole drilling for mounting. The pilot light indicates the charging status of the battery.
5. Restore Power: Once all connections are secure and verified, restore power to the fixture. The pilot light should illuminate, indicating the battery is charging.

Operating Instructions

The EI500 M12 operates automatically. When AC power is present, the emergency ballast's battery charges. In the event of an AC power failure, the unit automatically switches to emergency mode, illuminating one connected fluorescent lamp for a minimum of 90 minutes.

• Initial Charge: Allow the unit to charge for a minimum of 24 hours after initial installation before performing a test.
• Test Switch: Pressing the integrated test switch simulates a power failure, allowing you to verify the emergency operation of the ballast. The pilot light will turn off during the test and the connected lamp will illuminate in emergency mode. Releasing the button restores normal operation and charging.
• Pilot Light: The illuminated pilot light indicates that the battery is charging and the unit is ready for emergency operation.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the reliability of your emergency lighting system.

• Monthly Test: Conduct a monthly functional test by pressing the test switch for at least 30 seconds. The emergency lamp should illuminate.
• Annual Test: Perform an annual 90-minute discharge test. Disconnect AC power to the fixture for 90 minutes. The emergency lamp should remain illuminated for the entire duration. If the lamp does not stay lit for 90 minutes, the battery may need replacement.
• Cleaning: Keep the unit and fixture clean and free of dust. Disconnect power before cleaning.
• Battery Replacement: The battery is designed for a long service life. If it fails to hold a charge or provide 90 minutes of emergency power, it should be replaced by a qualified service technician with an approved replacement battery.
