QRP Repair Kit for Moen 1200 / 1200B Brass Stem Cartridge - Instruction Manual

Model: 1200B

Brand: QRP

Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation and maintenance of the QRP Repair Kit for Moen 1200 and 1200B Brass Stem Cartridges. This kit is designed to address leaky or dripping single-handle Moen faucets by replacing the existing cartridge, restoring proper function and preventing water waste.

Package Contents

The QRP Repair Kit includes the following components:

  • Brass Stem Cartridge (Non-OEM replacement)
  • Plastic Removal Cap Tool
  • Retainer Clips (2 pieces)

Compatibility

This non-OEM replacement cartridge is compatible with all Moen single-handle faucets, with the exception of Posi-Temp and ExactTemp models. Please verify your faucet model before proceeding with installation.

Installation Instructions

Follow these steps carefully to replace your Moen faucet cartridge.

Tools Required (Not Included):

  • Adjustable Wrench
  • Flathead Screwdriver
  • Needle-Nose Pliers (optional)
  • Penetrating Oil (optional, for seized cartridges)
  • Plumber's Silicone Grease (optional, for O-rings)
  1. Step 1: Shut Off Water Supply. Locate the main water shut-off valve for your home or the specific shut-off valves for the faucet you are working on. Turn them off completely to prevent water flow during the repair.
  2. Step 2: Remove Faucet Handle. Depending on your Moen faucet model, you may need to pry off a decorative cap to access the handle screw. Use a screwdriver to remove the screw and then pull the handle off the faucet stem.
  3. Step 3: Remove Retaining Nut/Collar. Some Moen faucets have a retaining nut or collar that holds the cartridge in place. Unscrew this if present.
  4. Step 4: Remove Retainer Clip. Locate the brass or copper retainer clip that secures the cartridge. Use a flathead screwdriver or needle-nose pliers to carefully pull out this clip. Retain it for comparison, but use a new one from the kit for reinstallation.
  5. Step 5: Remove Old Cartridge.QRP Moen 1200/1200B Cartridge Repair Kit components

Attach the provided white plastic removal cap tool to the stem of the old cartridge. Rotate the cartridge 90 degrees in either direction to loosen it. Pull the cartridge straight out. If it is stuck, gently rock it back and forth while pulling. Penetrating oil can be applied around the cartridge base if it is severely seized.
  6. Step 6: Clean Faucet Body. Inspect the inside of the faucet body for any debris, mineral buildup, or corrosion. Clean thoroughly to ensure a smooth fit for the new cartridge and proper sealing.
  7. Step 7: Install New Cartridge.QRP Moen 1200/1200B Cartridge with O-rings

Apply a thin layer of plumber's silicone grease to the O-rings of the new cartridge (optional, but recommended for easier installation and longevity). Align the new cartridge with the faucet body. Ensure the "HOT" side (usually marked with an "H" or a small notch) is oriented correctly according to your faucet's hot water inlet. Push the cartridge firmly into place until it is fully seated.
  8. Step 8: Reinstall Retainer Clip. Insert one of the new retainer clips from the kit into the slot to secure the cartridge. Ensure it is fully seated and holds the cartridge firmly.
  9. Step 9: Reinstall Retaining Nut/Collar (if applicable). Tighten any retaining nuts or collars that were removed in Step 3.
  10. Step 10: Reinstall Faucet Handle. Place the handle back onto the stem and secure it with the screw. Replace any decorative caps.
  11. Step 11: Restore Water Supply. Slowly turn the water supply back on. Check for leaks around the faucet base and test the hot and cold water flow.

Maintenance

To ensure optimal performance and longevity of your QRP replacement cartridge, periodic maintenance may be beneficial.

  • If the faucet becomes stiff or difficult to operate over time, the cartridge may benefit from being removed, cleaned, and lubricated with plumber's silicone grease.
  • Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners on the faucet exterior, as these can damage finishes and potentially affect internal components.
  • In areas with hard water, mineral deposits can accumulate. If flow issues arise, consider checking the aerator at the faucet spout and the cartridge for buildup.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues after installation, refer to the following troubleshooting guide:

  • Faucet Still Leaks/Drips:
    • Ensure the cartridge is fully seated and the retainer clip is correctly installed.
    • Verify that the O-rings on the cartridge are not damaged or pinched during installation.
    • Check for any debris inside the faucet body that might be preventing a proper seal.
  • No Water Flow or Reduced Flow:
    • Confirm the water supply is fully turned on.
    • Check if the cartridge is correctly oriented and fully inserted.
    • Inspect the aerator at the end of the faucet spout for clogs.
  • Difficulty Turning Handle:
    • Ensure the cartridge is properly lubricated with silicone grease.
    • Verify that the handle is correctly installed and not binding against any faucet components.
