Setup

1. Battery Installation

The VLF2.1 Metal Detector requires two 9V batteries (not included).

1. Locate the battery compartment, typically on the underside or rear of the control housing.
2. Open the battery compartment cover.
3. Insert two 9V batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+ and - terminals match the markings inside the compartment).
4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

2. Assembly

Assemble the metal detector by connecting the search coil to the lower stem, then attaching the lower stem to the upper stem, and finally securing the control housing to the upper stem. Ensure all connections are tight but do not overtighten.

3. Adjusting the Detector

While the length is not adjustable, ensure the search coil is parallel to the ground when held comfortably. The armrest should support your forearm, allowing for comfortable sweeping motions.

1. Powering On and Off

To power on the detector, rotate the Power knob clockwise from the 'OFF' position. To power off, rotate it counter-clockwise to 'OFF'.

2. Battery Test

To check battery status, rotate the Eliminator knob to the 'BATT TEST' position. The needle on the analog meter should point to the 'BATT OK' section. If it does not, replace the 9V batteries.

3. Sensitivity Control (Power Knob)

The Power knob also controls the detector's sensitivity. Turning it clockwise increases sensitivity, allowing detection of smaller or deeper objects. However, higher sensitivity can also increase false signals in mineralized ground or areas with electrical interference. Adjust for stable operation.

4. Discrimination Control (Eliminator Knob)

The Eliminator knob allows you to filter out unwanted metals, such as iron. Turning this knob clockwise increases the level of discrimination. This means the detector will ignore certain types of metal, indicated by a lack of audio response. Experiment with this setting to find the optimal balance for your search environment.

5. Search Modes

The VLF2.1 offers 2 search modes, typically controlled by the discrimination setting:

• All-Metal Mode: With the Eliminator knob set to its lowest discrimination, the detector will respond to all types of metal. This mode offers the greatest depth detection.
• Discrimination Mode: As you increase the Eliminator setting, the detector will begin to ignore iron and other unwanted targets, allowing you to focus on more desirable metals.

6. Detecting Objects

Sweep the search coil slowly and steadily from side to side, keeping it parallel to the ground and approximately 1-2 inches above the surface. When a metal object is detected, the detector will emit an audible tone, and the needle on the analog meter will move. The volume of the tone is proportional to the signal strength, indicating the proximity and size of the object. Coin-sized objects can be detected up to 5 inches deep, with larger items detectable at greater depths.

Maintenance

• Cleaning: Wipe down the detector with a damp cloth after each use. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents. The search coil is weather-resistant but the control housing is not fully waterproof; avoid submerging it.
• Storage: Store the detector in a dry, cool place. Remove batteries if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
• Coil Protection: Consider using a coil cover (if available) to protect the search coil from scratches and abrasion.

Troubleshooting

No Power

• Check battery installation and polarity.
• Ensure batteries are fresh and fully charged.
• Perform a battery test using the Eliminator knob.

Erratic Signals / False Signals

• Reduce the Power (sensitivity) setting.
• Increase the Eliminator (discrimination) setting to filter out unwanted metals or ground mineralization.
• Ensure no other electronic devices are operating nearby.
• Check that the search coil cable is securely connected and not damaged.

Weak or No Detection

• Increase the Power (sensitivity) setting.
• Ensure the search coil is being swept correctly and close to the ground.
