3. Safety Information

WARNING: Risk of Electric Shock.

  • Always disconnect power before installing, servicing, or removing the module.
  • Installation should be performed by qualified personnel in accordance with all local and national electrical codes.
  • Ensure all wiring connections are secure to prevent shorts or loose contacts.
  • Do not exceed the specified voltage and current ratings for the relay contacts or input.
  • Protect the module from moisture and extreme temperatures.

4. Setup and Installation

Carefully follow these instructions for proper installation of the ELK-912B Relay Module.

4.1 Component Identification

ELK 912B 1-Zone Relay Module with labeled components

Figure 1: ELK 912B Relay Module Layout
This image displays the ELK 912B relay module. Key components visible include the KLT1C12DC12 relay, input terminals labeled '-INPUT' and '+INPUT', and output terminals labeled 'N.O.' (Normally Open), 'COM' (Common), and 'N.C.' (Normally Closed). A red LED (D2) indicates input voltage. A resistor labeled 'CUT FOR 24V OPERATION' is present, indicating the voltage selection point. The module also shows 'ELK PRODUCTS, INC. HILDEBRAN, NC 28637' and 'ASSEMBLED IN USA'.

4.2 Wiring Terminals

  • -INPUT / +INPUT: These terminals are for the DC input voltage that activates the relay. Connect the negative (-) and positive (+) terminals of your 12V DC or 24V DC power source here. The red LED (D2) will illuminate when voltage is applied.
  • N.O. (Normally Open): This contact is open (no connection) when the relay is de-energized and closes (makes connection to COM) when the relay is energized.
  • COM (Common): This is the common contact for the relay output.
  • N.C. (Normally Closed): This contact is closed (connected to COM) when the relay is de-energized and opens (breaks connection to COM) when the relay is energized.

4.3 12V DC / 24V DC Operation Selection

The ELK-912B module is factory set for 12V DC operation. To switch to 24V DC operation:

  1. Ensure all power is disconnected from the module.
  2. Locate the resistor labeled "CUT FOR 24V OPERATION" on the circuit board (refer to Figure 1).
  3. Carefully cut the trace or resistor at this designated point. This action configures the module for 24V DC input.
  4. Do not cut this resistor if you intend to use 12V DC input.

4.4 Mounting

The module features a mounting hole in the center of the board for secure installation. Use an appropriate screw to fasten the module to a stable surface, ensuring it is protected from environmental factors.

5. Operating Instructions

Once properly wired and configured for the correct voltage (12V DC or 24V DC):

  1. Apply the specified DC voltage (12V or 24V) to the -INPUT and +INPUT terminals.
  2. The red LED (D2) on the module should illuminate, indicating that the input voltage is present and the relay coil is energized.
  3. When the relay is energized, the N.O. contact will close (connect to COM), and the N.C. contact will open (disconnect from COM).
  4. When the input voltage is removed, the relay will de-energize, and the contacts will return to their normal (de-energized) state: N.O. will open, and N.C. will close.

Use the N.O., COM, and N.C. terminals to control external circuits or devices as required by your application.

6. Maintenance

The ELK-912B Relay Module is designed for reliable, long-term operation with minimal maintenance. However, periodic checks can help ensure continued performance:

  • Visual Inspection: Periodically inspect the module for any signs of physical damage, discoloration, or loose connections.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the module free from dust, dirt, and moisture. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners.
  • Connection Integrity: Ensure all terminal screw connections remain tight and secure.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Relay Not Activating (LED Off):
    • Verify that the correct DC voltage (12V or 24V, depending on configuration) is applied to the -INPUT and +INPUT terminals.
    • Check for proper polarity of the input voltage.
    • Ensure the "CUT FOR 24V OPERATION" resistor is correctly configured for your input voltage. If using 12V, it should be intact. If using 24V, it should be cut.
    • Inspect input wiring for breaks or loose connections.
  • Relay Not Switching (LED On):
    • Confirm the LED (D2) is illuminated, indicating the relay coil is energized.
    • Check the wiring to the N.O., COM, and N.C. terminals for continuity and proper connection to the controlled device.
    • Ensure the load connected to the relay contacts does not exceed the specified current and voltage ratings (NO: 15A/120VAC, 28VDC; NC: 12A/120VAC, 28VDC). Overloading can damage the relay contacts.
  • Intermittent Operation:
    • Check all wiring connections for tightness.
    • Ensure the power supply to the input terminals is stable and free from fluctuations.
