Kaito PL380
TECSUN PL-380 DSP World Band PLL Radio Receiver User Manual
Model: PL380
Introduction
The TECSUN PL-380 is a portable multi-band radio featuring Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology. It utilizes a Si4734 Micro-chip from Silicon Labs (USA) to digitize analog MW/FM/SW broadcasting signals, enhancing sensitivity, selectivity, signal-to-noise ratio, and anti-interference capabilities. This radio includes the innovative Easy Tuning Mode (ETM) function, alarm features, and temperature display options.
What's in the Box
- TECSUN PL-380 Radio Receiver
- USB Cable
- Earphones
- Battery (Note: The radio typically uses 3 AA batteries, though some specifications may refer to rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries for charging functionality.)
- External Wire Antenna (for enhanced reception)
- User Manual
Setup
1. Battery Installation
Locate the battery compartment on the back of the radio. Open the cover and insert 3 AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-). The radio also supports charging of Ni-MH rechargeable batteries via the USB port.

Operating Instructions
1. Power On/Off
Press the POWER button to turn the radio on or off. The radio features a highly intelligent On/Off switch, allowing you to set a sleep timer from 1 to 120 minutes.
2. Band Selection
Press the FM, MW, LW, or SW buttons to select the desired frequency band. The radio supports:
- FM: 87 ~ 108MHz (regional variations apply, e.g., Russia 64 ~ 108MHz, Japan 76 ~ 108MHz, USA 87.5 ~ 108MHz)
- MW: 522 ~ 1620kHz (USA 520 ~ 1710kHz) with 9kHz / 10kHz tuning step selectable
- LW: 153KHz to 513KHz
- SW: 2300KHz to 21950KHz
3. Tuning Modes
The PL-380 offers seven tuning modes:
- Easy Tuning Mode (ETM): Scans the entire frequency band and selects available stations without overwriting existing memories. Useful for finding local stations when traveling.
- Jog Dial Manual Tuning: Use the tuning wheel to manually adjust the frequency.
- Auto Scan Tuning (VF): Automatically scans and stops at strong signals.
- Pre-setting Manual Scan Tuning: Manually scan through preset stations.
- Memory Pre-setting Auto Scan Tuning: Automatically scans through preset stations.
- Memory Pre-setting Address Direct Entry Tuning: Directly enter a memory address to recall a station.
- Direct Frequency Entry: Use the numeric keypad to directly enter a desired frequency.
4. Display Features
The LCD display shows various information:
- Digital Clock: Displays time in 12/24 hour format.
- Alarm Functions: Wake by buzzer or your favorite radio station.
- Temperature: Can be displayed in Celsius or Fahrenheit.
- Signal Strength & Noise Level: Displays signal strength in dBu and noise level in dB (for AM/SW bands).
- Backlight: The display backlight activates when the tuning knob is touched or the LIGHT button is pressed.
5. Bandwidth Adjustment (AM/SW)
For AM and SW bands, the BW button allows you to change the IF bandwidth (1, 2, 3, 4, 6kHz). A narrower bandwidth can reduce background noise but may affect audio fidelity.
6. Headphone Use
Plug the earphones into the 3.5mm earphone jack on the side of the radio for private listening. FM stereo reception is available through headphones.
Maintenance
- Keep the radio clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Remove batteries if the radio will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
- Store the radio in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
Troubleshooting
Radio Unresponsive or Locked Up
If the radio becomes unresponsive or appears locked up, remove the batteries for approximately 30 minutes, then reinsert them. This performs a hard reset and can resolve issues caused by static electricity or minor software glitches.
Poor Reception
- Ensure the telescopic antenna is fully extended for FM and SW bands.
- For SW, try attaching the external wire antenna.
- Adjust the radio's position or orientation to improve signal reception.
- For AM/SW, experiment with different IF bandwidth settings using the BW button.
Buttons Difficult to Press
Due to the compact design, some buttons may require precise pressure. Ensure you are pressing directly on the center of the button. Using a fingernail may sometimes be necessary for better tactile feedback.
