Setup
1. Battery Installation and Charging
Insert the supplied NP-FV30 rechargeable battery pack into the battery compartment. Connect the AC adaptor to the camcorder and a power outlet to charge the battery. The built-in USB cable also allows for charging when connected to a computer.

2. Memory Card Insertion
The DCR-SX45 supports Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo, SD, and SDHC media. Insert a compatible memory card into the dual media card slot until it clicks into place.
Operating the Camcorder
1. Powering On/Off
Open the 3.0" touch-screen Clear Photo LCD Plus display to power on the camcorder. Close the LCD display to power off the device and automatically activate the auto lens cover.

2. Recording Videos
With the camcorder powered on, press the RECORD button to begin recording. Press it again to stop. The 70x Extended Zoom allows for capturing distant subjects while maintaining image quality. SteadyShot image stabilization with Active Mode helps reduce blur during recording.
3. Taking Still Photos
Switch to photo mode (if available) or use the dedicated photo button to capture still images. Face Detection technology optimizes settings for clear and natural-looking portraits.
4. Intelligent Auto Mode
The Intelligent Auto mode analyzes your shooting environment and automatically selects optimal settings from 36 possible scene combinations, including Landscape, Backlight, Twilight, Spotlight, Macro, Portrait, and Tripod.
5. Built-in LED Video Light
Activate the built-in LED video light for improved visibility in low-light conditions.
6. Reviewing Footage
Use the Film Roll Index to preview the beginning of scenes or the Face Index to quickly locate footage based on detected faces. Navigate through your recordings using the touch-screen LCD.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning
Gently wipe the camcorder body with a soft, dry cloth. For the lens and LCD screen, use a lens cleaning cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
2. Battery Care
To prolong battery life, fully charge the battery before first use and after extended periods of non-use. Store batteries in a cool, dry place. Avoid exposing batteries to extreme temperatures.
3. Storage
When not in use, store the camcorder in a dry, dust-free environment. Ensure the LCD screen is closed to protect the lens with the automatic lens cover.

- Power On Failure: Ensure the battery is charged and correctly inserted. Close and reopen the LCD screen.
- Memory Card Error: Reinsert the memory card. If the issue persists, try formatting the card (this will erase all data) or use a different compatible card.
- Poor Image Quality: Check the lens for smudges or dust. Ensure adequate lighting. Adjust settings if not using Intelligent Auto mode.
- No Audio Recording: Verify the built-in zoom microphone is not obstructed. Check audio settings in the menu.

Connectivity
1. USB Connection
The camcorder features a built-in USB 2.0 cable for easy connection to a computer for file transfer and charging. No separate cable is needed.
2. Direct Copy to External HDD
You can copy videos directly from your camcorder to an external hard disk drive (sold separately) without needing a PC. This requires a VMC-UAM1 cable (sold separately) and AC power for the camcorder. The external HDD/USB media should be less than 2TB and formatted in FAT-32.
3. Sony Picture Motion Browser (PMB) Software
The included CD-ROM contains Sony Picture Motion Browser software, offering an intuitive way to transfer, sort, and view your video and still images on a compatible PC (Microsoft Windows XP SP3/ Windows Vista SP2/Windows 7). It also supports burning memories to DVD and one-click upload to popular video/photo sharing sites.
