Setup and Installation
Safety First: Before beginning installation, ensure all propane tank valves are closed and there are no open flames or ignition sources nearby. Wear appropriate safety gear.
Tools Required:
- Adjustable wrench or appropriate size wrenches for fittings.
- Thread sealant (gas-rated).
- Screwdriver or drill for mounting screws.
- Leak detection solution (soapy water).
Installation Steps:
- Remove Old Regulator (if applicable): Close all propane tank valves. Disconnect the existing pigtail hoses from the propane tanks and the main gas line from the old regulator. Carefully remove the old regulator and its mounting bracket.
- Mount the New Regulator: The Cavagna regulator comes with a mounting bracket. Securely attach the new regulator to the RV frame or designated mounting area using appropriate screws. Ensure it is mounted vertically with the vent opening facing downwards, as required by UL standard 144.
- Connect Inlet Hoses: Attach the two 1/4" inverted flare inlet hoses (pigtails) to the regulator's inlet ports. Apply gas-rated thread sealant to the threads if necessary, and tighten securely with a wrench.
- Connect to Propane Tanks: Connect the ACME nuts on the other end of the pigtail hoses to your propane tanks. Hand-tighten first, then use a wrench to ensure a snug, leak-free connection.
- Connect Main Gas Line: Apply gas-rated thread sealant to the 3/8" Female Pipe Thread outlet of the regulator. Connect your RV's main gas line to this outlet and tighten securely.
- Leak Test: Slowly open the propane tank valves. Apply a leak detection solution (soapy water) to all connections. Bubbles indicate a leak. Tighten connections as needed until no bubbles appear.

Operating Instructions
Initial Setup:
- Ensure both propane tanks are connected and their valves are open.
- Turn the lever on the regulator towards the primary (full) propane tank. The indicator window on the regulator should turn green, signifying gas flow from that tank.
- The other tank will serve as your reserve.
Automatic Changeover:
When the primary propane tank runs out, the regulator will automatically switch to drawing propane from the reserve tank. The indicator window will change from green to red, signaling that the primary tank is empty and needs refilling.

Refilling an Empty Tank:
- Once the indicator turns red, turn the lever on the regulator to point towards the reserve tank (the one that is now supplying gas). This will ensure continuous gas flow to your RV.
- Close the valve on the empty tank.
- Disconnect the empty tank from its pigtail hose. The built-in back check valve prevents gas from escaping from the reserve tank.
- Remove the empty tank for refilling.
- After refilling, reconnect the tank to its pigtail hose and open its valve.
- You can now switch the lever back to this newly refilled tank to make it the primary, or leave it on the other tank until it runs out.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of your propane system.
- Periodic Leak Checks: Perform a leak test on all connections (regulator inlets/outlets, pigtail connections to tanks) at least annually, or whenever a tank is replaced, or if you suspect a leak. Use a soapy water solution; bubbles indicate a leak.
- Inspect Hoses: Regularly inspect the pigtail hoses for any signs of wear, cracks, kinks, or damage. Replace damaged hoses immediately.
- Check Indicator: Ensure the full/empty indicator is functioning correctly. If it appears stuck or does not change color, inspect the system for issues.
- Clean Regulator: Keep the regulator unit clean and free from debris. Ensure the plastic cap cover is in place to protect the unit from weather elements.
- Vent Opening: Ensure the vent opening on the bottom of the regulator is clear and unobstructed.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No gas flow to appliances. | Propane tank valves closed, empty tank, excess flow device activated, regulator malfunction. | Ensure tank valves are fully open. Check indicator for red (empty tank). Reset excess flow device by closing tank valve, disconnecting hose, waiting 30 seconds, reconnecting, and slowly opening valve. If issues persist, consult a qualified technician. |
| Indicator stuck on red or green. | Low pressure in tank, faulty indicator, regulator issue. | Verify tank levels. Gently tap the indicator. If it remains stuck, the regulator may need inspection or replacement by a professional. |
| Propane odor or hissing sound. | Gas leak. | Immediately close all propane tank valves. Ventilate the area. Perform a leak test with soapy water. Tighten any leaking connections. If the leak cannot be stopped, do not use the system and seek professional assistance. |
Important: For any persistent issues or concerns regarding propane safety, always consult a qualified RV technician or gas professional.
