SkyTech SKY-5301

SkyTech SKY-5301 Fireplace Remote and Thermostat Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

The SkyTech SKY-5301 remote control system provides a safe, reliable, and user-friendly method for operating gas heating appliances. This system allows for both thermostatic and manual control directly from the handheld transmitter. It operates using radio frequencies (RF) within a 20-foot range, utilizing non-directional signals. The system is pre-programmed with one of 1,048,567 security codes at the factory. For initial use, the remote receiver's code must be matched to the transmitter's code.

2. Safety Information

  • Read all instructions carefully before installation and operation.
  • This system is designed for use with millivolt gas valves only. The receiver acts as a dry contact switch and will not output any voltage.
  • Ensure all wiring is performed by a qualified technician and complies with local codes.
  • Do not expose the transmitter or receiver to water or extreme temperatures.
  • Replace batteries promptly when the low battery indicator appears to ensure proper operation.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all components are present in your package:

4.1. Handheld Transmitter

  • LCD Display: Shows room temperature, set temperature, 24-hour clock, and a 9-hour countdown timer. Features a backlight for visibility.
  • Buttons: Three buttons (Up, Mode, Down) for navigation and setting adjustments.
  • Functionality: Allows for manual or thermostatic control of the fireplace.

4.2. Wall-Mounted Receiver

  • Slider Switch: Features ON, REMOTE, and OFF positions for direct control or remote operation.
  • LEARN Button: Used to synchronize the receiver with the transmitter.
  • Power: Battery-powered for reliable operation.
  • Compatibility: Designed exclusively for millivolt gas valves, acting as a dry contact switch. It does not output voltage.

5. Setup

5.1. Battery Installation

Install the included AA batteries into both the transmitter and the receiver unit.

  1. Transmitter: Open the battery compartment on the back of the handheld transmitter. Insert the batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-). Close the compartment.
  2. Receiver: Remove the wall plate cover. Open the battery compartment on the receiver unit. Insert the batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-). Close the compartment.

5.2. Receiver Wiring

The receiver unit must be wired to your fireplace's millivolt gas valve. This process typically involves connecting two wires from the receiver to the appropriate terminals on the gas valve. Ensure the fireplace's gas supply is turned OFF before proceeding with any wiring.

  1. Locate the millivolt gas valve on your fireplace.
  2. Identify the two terminals designated for remote control or thermostat connection. These are typically labeled TH and TH/TP or similar.
  3. Connect the two wires from the receiver unit to these terminals. The polarity of these wires usually does not matter for a dry contact switch.
  4. Secure the connections.

5.3. Mounting the Receiver

After wiring, mount the receiver unit to the wall using the provided wall plate and hardware. Ensure it is in a location where it can receive signals from the transmitter, ideally within 20 feet and not obstructed by large metal objects.

5.4. Pairing the Transmitter and Receiver (Learning Function)

The transmitter and receiver must be paired to communicate. This process is called the "learning function."

  1. Ensure batteries are installed in both units.
  2. On the receiver unit, slide the ON/REMOTE/OFF switch to the REMOTE position.
  3. Press and hold the LEARN button on the receiver for approximately 3 seconds until you hear a short beep.
  4. Within 20 seconds of the beep, press any button on the handheld transmitter.
  5. The receiver will emit a series of beeps, confirming that the transmitter and receiver are now paired.
  6. Test the connection by pressing the "Up" or "Down" button on the transmitter to see if the fireplace responds.

6. Operation

6.1. Transmitter Display and Controls

The backlit LCD on the transmitter provides essential information and allows for easy control.

  • Display Information:
    • Current Room Temperature
    • Set Temperature
    • 24-Hour Clock
    • 9-Hour Countdown Timer
    • Battery Level Indicator
  • Buttons:
    • UP (▲): Increases set temperature, adjusts time/timer up.
    • MODE/SET: Cycles through operating modes, enters setting menus.
    • DOWN (▼): Decreases set temperature, adjusts time/timer down.

6.2. Operating Modes

The system supports two primary operating modes:

  • Manual Mode: The fireplace turns ON or OFF directly when commanded by the transmitter, regardless of temperature.
  • Thermostatic Mode: The fireplace will turn ON or OFF automatically to maintain the set temperature.

6.3. Setting Temperature

  1. Press the MODE/SET button until the display shows the desired operating mode (e.g., "THERMO").
  2. Use the UP (▲) or DOWN (▼) buttons to adjust the set temperature to your desired level. The display will show the set temperature.
  3. The system will automatically maintain this temperature in thermostatic mode.

6.4. Setting the Timer

The 9-hour countdown timer can be used to automatically turn off the fireplace after a set duration.

  1. Press the MODE/SET button until the display shows "TIMER".
  2. Use the UP (▲) or DOWN (▼) buttons to set the desired countdown duration (up to 9 hours).
  3. Once set, the timer will begin counting down. The fireplace will turn off when the timer reaches zero.

7. Maintenance

7.1. Battery Replacement

When the low battery indicator appears on the transmitter's LCD, or if the system becomes unresponsive, replace the batteries in both the transmitter and receiver with fresh AA batteries. Always replace all batteries at the same time.

7.2. Cleaning

Wipe the transmitter and receiver surfaces with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the units in water.

8. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible Cause / Solution
