2. Safety Information

Operating a generator can be hazardous. Always follow these safety precautions to reduce the risk of injury, fire, or carbon monoxide poisoning.

2.1 Carbon Monoxide Hazard

  • Generators produce carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless, and poisonous gas.
  • NEVER operate the generator indoors, in a garage, shed, or any enclosed or partially enclosed space.
  • Always operate the generator outdoors in a well-ventilated area, far from windows, doors, and vents.
  • Install battery-operated carbon monoxide alarms in your home or any area where the generator might be used.

2.2 Fire Hazard

  • Fuel is highly flammable. Store fuel in an approved container in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources.
  • Do not refuel the generator while it is running or hot. Allow the engine to cool before adding fuel.
  • Do not overfill the fuel tank. Leave space for fuel expansion.
  • Keep flammable materials away from the generator during operation.

2.3 Electrical Shock Hazard

  • Do not operate the generator in wet conditions, such as rain or snow.
  • Ensure all electrical connections are secure and in good condition.
  • Always use properly rated extension cords.
  • Never connect the generator directly to your home's electrical system without a transfer switch installed by a qualified electrician. This can cause backfeeding, which is dangerous for utility workers.
