Important Safety Instructions

Always prioritize safety when installing, operating, or maintaining marine equipment. Failure to follow these instructions could result in serious injury or damage to your vessel.

  • Ensure the engine is turned off and the battery is disconnected before performing any installation or maintenance.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and eye protection.
  • Verify all connections are secure and properly tightened before operating the vessel.
  • Regularly inspect control cables and connections for wear, corrosion, or damage. Replace components as needed.
  • If you are unsure about any part of the installation or maintenance process, consult a qualified marine technician.

Setup and Installation

Proper installation of your SeaStar Steering Kit is crucial for safe and effective operation. This section provides guidance on key steps, including checking existing controls and measuring for new cables.

Pre-Installation Control Check

Before beginning any work, test your existing shift and throttle controls. They should move easily in both forward and reverse positions. If they feel stiff or are locked up, it indicates a potential issue with the control cables or the control unit itself. The following video provides a comprehensive guide on assessing and measuring control cables.

Video: This official SeaStar Solutions technical training video demonstrates how to measure and assess shift and throttle control cables, including identifying part numbers and proper routing.

Identifying Control Cable Part Numbers

If your control cables are stiff, you may need to replace them. Old Teleflex and new SeaStar Solutions cable part numbers typically start with "CC" or "CCX" followed by five numbers. The first three numbers indicate the cable type, and the last two indicate the length in feet. For Morse cables, the part number starts with a single letter, followed by five or six digits, a dash, one to three digits, another dash, and then the cable length in feet and inches.

Measuring Control Cable Length

If the part number is unreadable, measure the old cable from tip to tip and round up to the nearest even foot. For new installations, measure from the middle of the control unit directly to the throttle lever/transmission control, following the best path with as few and large sweeping bends as possible (minimum 8-inch radius). Add 4 feet to this measurement to create a loop in front of the outboard, allowing for engine movement without damaging cables. This process is easier with a helper.

Cable Routing Considerations

  • For inboard and inboard/outboard vessels, control cables may be two different lengths.
  • For outboards, control cables will typically be the same length.
  • If your boat has a rigging tube, the cable loop may be below the splashwell deck, and the cable will come to the engine through that rigging tube.

Reusing Cable Ends

Most of the time, the original cable ends can be reused. However, if they appear worn or damaged, it is recommended to replace them as well to ensure optimal performance and safety.

Operation

The SeaStar MT3 Twin Control unit provides precise control over your boat's throttle and shift functions. The two levers operate independently, allowing for fine adjustments to speed and direction.

  • Shift Control: Move the lever forward for forward gear, and backward for reverse gear. The neutral position is in the middle.
  • Throttle Control: Once in gear, further movement of the lever in the same direction will increase engine RPM.
  • Ensure smooth and deliberate movements of the levers to avoid sudden changes in speed or direction.

Maintenance and Care

Regular maintenance will extend the life and ensure the reliable operation of your SeaStar Steering Kit.

  • Cleaning: Clean the exterior of the control unit with mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect all visible parts of the control unit and cables for signs of wear, corrosion, or damage. Check for loose fasteners.
  • Lubrication: Consult your engine and control unit manuals for specific lubrication points and recommended lubricants.
  • Cable Condition: Ensure control cables are free from kinks, sharp bends, or excessive friction. Replace if movement becomes stiff or erratic.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

This table outlines common issues you might encounter with your control system and potential solutions.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Stiff or hard-to-move control leversCorroded or worn control cables; stiff engine/transmission linkage; worn control unit mechanism.Disconnect cables at engine/transmission and test control. If still stiff, remove cable from control and test cable. Replace worn cables or lubricate linkages.
Delayed or unresponsive shifting/throttleExcessive friction in cables; improper cable length or routing; worn cable ends.Inspect cable routing for sharp bends. Check cable ends for wear. Replace cables if necessary. Ensure proper cable length.
Control levers feel loose or have excessive playLoose mounting hardware; worn internal components of the control unit.Check and tighten all mounting bolts. If play persists, internal components may be worn and require professional inspection or replacement.
