Setup
1. Charging the Battery
Before first use, fully charge both 12V Max Lithium-Ion batteries. Insert the battery into the charger, ensuring it clicks into place. The charger's indicator light will show the charging status. A full charge typically takes approximately 30 minutes.
2. Installing the Battery
To install a charged battery, align the battery with the base of the drill/driver handle and slide it in until it clicks securely into place. To remove the battery, press the release tabs on the sides of the battery and pull it out.
3. Installing/Changing Bits

- Ensure the drill/driver is turned off and the forward/reverse switch is in the neutral (locked) position.
- Twist the chuck counter-clockwise to open the jaws.
- Insert the desired drill bit or screwdriver bit into the chuck. Ensure the bit is inserted as far as possible for maximum grip.
- Twist the chuck clockwise to tighten the jaws firmly around the bit. The 3/8-inch single-sleeve chuck allows for easy, keyless bit changes.
Operating Instructions
1. Powering On/Off and Speed Control
The drill/driver is activated by pressing the variable speed trigger. The further the trigger is pressed, the faster the drill rotates. Release the trigger to turn off the tool.
2. Forward/Reverse Switch
The forward/reverse switch is located above the trigger. Push it to the left for forward rotation (for drilling and driving screws) and to the right for reverse rotation (for removing screws). When the switch is in the center position, the trigger is locked, preventing accidental activation.
3. Gear Selection (Speed)
The drill/driver features two mechanical speed settings:
- Gear 1 (Low Speed): 0-350 RPM. Ideal for high-torque applications such as driving large screws or drilling into tough materials.
- Gear 2 (High Speed): 0-1,300 RPM. Suitable for faster drilling and driving smaller screws.
To change gears, slide the gear selector switch located on top of the tool. Ensure the tool is stopped before changing gears to prevent damage.
4. Torque Adjustment (Clutch Settings)
The torque adjustment collar allows you to set the amount of torque applied before the clutch disengages. This prevents over-tightening screws and damaging the workpiece or screw head. There are 20 torque settings plus a drill mode:
- Settings 1-20: Lower numbers provide less torque, suitable for smaller screws or softer materials. Higher numbers provide more torque for larger screws or harder materials.
- Drill Mode (Drill Bit Icon): Provides maximum torque for drilling applications, bypassing the clutch mechanism.
Rotate the collar to select the desired setting. Start with a lower setting and increase it as needed to achieve the desired tightness without stripping the screw or damaging the material.

Maintenance
- Cleaning: Regularly clean the ventilation openings on the tool to prevent dust and debris buildup, which can affect performance and motor life. Use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use water or chemical cleaners.
- Battery Care: Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not expose batteries to extreme temperatures. For long-term storage, charge batteries to about 50% capacity.
- Chuck Maintenance: Periodically inspect the chuck jaws for wear or damage. Clean any debris from the chuck mechanism.
- Electronic Cell Protection (ECP): This Bosch feature protects the battery against overload, overheating, and deep discharge, extending its lifespan.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Tool does not start. | Battery not inserted correctly or discharged. Forward/reverse switch in locked position. | Ensure battery is fully inserted and charged. Move forward/reverse switch out of the center (locked) position. |
| Reduced power or short runtime. | Battery is low or nearing end of life. | Recharge the battery. If problem persists with fully charged batteries, consider replacing the battery. |
| Bit slips in chuck. | Chuck not tightened sufficiently or bit shank is dirty/damaged. | Ensure chuck is tightened firmly. Clean or replace the bit if necessary. |
| Over-tightening screws. | Torque setting is too high. | Adjust the torque collar to a lower setting. |
