1. Introduction
The Progressive Industries EMS-HW50C is a 50 Amp Heavy Duty RV Surge Protector equipped with an advanced Electrical Management System (EMS). This unit is designed to provide top-tier protection for your RV's sensitive electronics and appliances against various power fluctuations and surges encountered at campgrounds or other power sources. It actively monitors incoming power and disconnects the RV if hazardous conditions are detected, ensuring the longevity and safety of your electrical equipment.
2. Safety Information
WARNING: To reduce the risk of electrical shock, always open or disconnect the circuit from the power-distribution system (or system) of the building before installing or servicing current-sensing transformers. Installation should only be performed by a qualified electrician or RV technician.
This product may expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information, go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
- Always ensure the power source is disconnected before handling the unit or any associated wiring.
- Do not operate the unit if it appears damaged.
- Keep the unit away from water and extreme temperatures.
- Ensure proper grounding for safe operation.
3. Setup & Installation
The EMS-HW50C is a hardwired unit designed for permanent installation within your RV's electrical system. It should be installed after the transfer switch but before the main electrical panel.

Installation Steps:
- Power Disconnection: Ensure all power to the RV, including shore power and generator, is completely disconnected.
- Mounting: Select a suitable, dry location within your RV for mounting the main EMS unit. Ensure adequate ventilation and access for wiring.
- Wiring Connections: Connect the incoming power lines (Line/Input) to the designated terminals on the EMS unit. Connect the outgoing power lines (Load/Output) from the EMS unit to your RV's main electrical panel. Ensure all connections are secure and follow local electrical codes.
- Grounding: Securely connect the ground wires to the designated ground screws on the unit.
- Remote Display Installation: The remote display provides real-time status and error codes. Mount the remote display in a convenient, visible location inside your RV. Connect the remote display to the main EMS unit using the provided data cable.

After installation, ensure all covers are securely fastened to protect internal components.
4. Operation
Once installed and powered, the EMS-HW50C continuously monitors the incoming electrical power. The integrated display on the unit and the remote display will show real-time voltage and amperage readings for both lines, as well as frequency and any detected error codes.
Upon initial power-up or after a power interruption, the unit typically undergoes a 30-second delay. This delay allows the EMS to perform a comprehensive diagnostic check of the power source, ensuring it is clean and safe before allowing power to pass through to your RV.

The display cycles through various readings:
- Line 1 Voltage & Amperage: Displays the voltage and current draw on the first power line.
- Line 2 Voltage & Amperage: Displays the voltage and current draw on the second power line.
- Frequency: Shows the frequency of the incoming power (should typically be 60 Hz).
- Error Codes: If a fault is detected, an error code (e.g., E1, E2) will be displayed. Refer to the Troubleshooting section for a full list of codes and their meanings.

5. Maintenance
The EMS-HW50C is designed for durability and minimal maintenance. However, periodic inspection is recommended to ensure optimal performance and safety:
- Visual Inspection: Regularly check the unit and its wiring for any signs of physical damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
- Cleanliness: Keep the unit free from dust, dirt, and debris. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Functionality Check: Periodically observe the display during operation to ensure it is cycling through readings correctly and not displaying persistent error codes.
If any issues are observed, refer to the Troubleshooting section or contact customer support.
6. Troubleshooting
The EMS-HW50C is equipped with advanced fault detection capabilities. If an electrical issue is detected, the unit will display an error code (E0-E10 or PE) and may cut power to your RV to prevent damage. Refer to the table below for common error codes and their meanings:

Figure 4: Error codes displayed on the EMS-HW50C unit.
| Code | Description | Action |
|---|---|---|
| E0 | Normal Operating Condition | No action required. |
| E1 | Reverse Polarity | Report issue to campground management. |
| E2 | Open Ground | Report issue to campground management. |
| E3 | High Voltage (Line 1 above 132V) | Report issue to campground management. |
| E4 | Low Voltage (Line 1 below 104V) | Report issue to campground management. |
| E5 | High Voltage (Line 2 above 132V) | Report issue to campground management. |
| E6 | Low Voltage (Line 2 below 104V) | Report issue to campground management. |
| E7 | High Frequency (above 69Hz) | Report issue to campground management. |
| E8 | Low Frequency (below 51Hz) | Report issue to campground management. |
| E9 | Data Link Down | Check remote display cable connection. |
| E10 | Service Surge Protector | Contact Progressive Industries customer support. |
| PE | Denotes Previous Error | Indicates a past fault. Check power source. |
