What's in the Box:

  • Suburban 12 Gallon Gas and Electric Water Heater unit.

Additional components such as the exterior access door, plumbing fittings, and electrical wiring are sold separately and must be sourced according to your specific RV setup and local codes.

Operating Instructions

The Suburban SW12DE water heater offers both gas and electric operation modes. It features a remote switch for electronic control, allowing convenient activation from inside your RV.

Gas Operation (Electronic Ignition):

  1. Ensure the gas supply to the appliance is turned on.
  2. Activate the gas ignition switch, typically located inside your RV. The electronic ignition system will automatically attempt to light the burner.
  3. Observe the burner flame through the viewing port (if available) to confirm ignition.
  4. If the burner does not light after a few attempts, turn off the gas ignition switch, wait a few minutes, and then try again.

Electric Operation:

  1. Ensure the water heater tank is full of water before activating the electric element. Operating the electric element with an empty tank will cause damage.
  2. Turn on the electrical switch for the water heater, typically located inside your RV.
  3. The electric heating element will begin to heat the water.

Note: Both gas and electric modes can be used simultaneously for faster water heating.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficient operation of your Suburban water heater.

Anode Rod Inspection:

The porcelain-lined steel tank is protected by an anode rod, which absorbs corrosive action. This rod should be inspected annually and replaced when it is significantly depleted (approximately 75% consumed). To inspect, drain the water heater and remove the anode rod from the drain opening.

Draining and Winterization:

Before periods of non-use or freezing temperatures, the water heater must be completely drained to prevent damage. Turn off both gas and electric power to the unit, open all hot water faucets inside the RV, and remove the anode rod to allow the tank to drain fully. Consult your RV's manual for complete winterization procedures.

Cleaning:

Periodically clean the exterior of the unit and ensure the burner and exhaust vents are free from obstructions. Do not use abrasive cleaners.

Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your water heater, consider the following common checks:

  • No Hot Water (Gas): Check if the gas supply is on, ensure the electronic ignition switch is activated, and verify there is propane in the tank.
  • No Hot Water (Electric): Confirm the electric switch is on, check the circuit breaker, and ensure the RV is connected to shore power or the inverter is active.
  • Water Leaks: Inspect all plumbing connections for tightness. If leaks persist from the unit itself, especially from the tank, it may indicate internal damage. The provided video "Leaks right out of the box" by a customer shows water leaking from the unit, which would require professional inspection or replacement.
  • Pilot Light Issues: For models with pilot lights (though this model is electronic ignition), ensure the pilot is lit.

For persistent problems or complex repairs, it is highly recommended to contact a qualified RV technician or Suburban customer support.
