4. Setup

4.1 Placement

Place the TC-K555ES on a stable, level surface. Avoid locations subject to:

4.2 Power Connection

4.3 Audio Connections

  • Connect the LINE OUT jacks of the TC-K555ES to the TAPE IN or REC IN jacks on your amplifier.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Basic Playback

  1. Press the POWER button to turn on the unit.
  2. Open the cassette compartment and insert a cassette tape with the open edge facing down. Close the compartment.
  3. Select the appropriate TAPE type (NORMAL, CrO2, Fe-Cr, METAL) for the inserted tape.
  4. If desired, activate DOLBY NR (B-Type or C-Type) for noise reduction.
  5. Press the PLAY button to begin playback.
  6. Adjust the volume on your amplifier or receiver. For private listening, use the HEADPHONES jack and its volume control.
  7. To stop playback, press the STOP button.

5.2 Recording

  1. Insert a recordable cassette tape.
  2. Select the correct TAPE type. For Type II (CrO2) tapes, you may fine-tune the BIAS knob for optimal recording.
  3. Select the input source on your amplifier.
  4. Set the MONITOR switch to SOURCE to monitor the input signal.
  5. Activate DOLBY NR (B-Type or C-Type) if desired. If recording FM stereo broadcasts, turn ON the MPX FILTER.
  6. Press the REC button. The unit will enter record-pause mode.
  7. Start playing the audio source. Adjust the REC LEVEL L-R knob while observing the PEAK PROGRAM METER. Aim for peaks to reach around 0 dB to +4 dB, avoiding consistent red indicators to prevent distortion.
  8. Press the PLAY button to start recording.
  9. To pause recording, press the PAUSE button. To resume, press PAUSE again.
  10. To stop recording, press the STOP button.
  11. To create a blank section during recording, press the REC MUTE button.

5.3 Linear Counter and Memory Function

The LINEAR COUNTER displays the elapsed time in minutes and seconds. The MEMORY function allows you to return to a specific point on the tape.

  1. During playback or recording, press the MEMORY button at the desired point. The counter will store this position.
  2. To return to the memorized point, press the REWIND or FAST FORWARD button. The tape will stop automatically when it reaches the memorized position.
  3. Press RESET to clear the counter and memory.

6.1 Cleaning Heads and Capstans

Clean the tape heads, capstans, and pinch rollers after every 10-20 hours of use, or if you notice a decrease in sound quality.

  3. Gently wipe the tape heads, capstans, and pinch rollers until clean.
  4. Allow the components to dry completely before inserting a tape.

6.2 Demagnetization

Over time, tape heads can become magnetized, leading to increased noise and dull sound. Demagnetize the heads after approximately 50 hours of use.

  • Use a non-contact tape head demagnetizer.
  • Follow the demagnetizer's instructions carefully to avoid damaging the heads.
