1. Introduction

The GE Z-Wave In-Wall Smart Lighting Control Switch (Model 12722) allows you to wirelessly control and schedule your lights and small appliances. This device integrates into your Z-Wave smart home system, providing convenient control from smartphones, tablets, PCs, and Z-Wave enabled remotes. It is designed for in-wall installation with hardwired connections and is compatible with various Z-Wave hubs, including SmartThings, Wink, and Alexa (requires a compatible Z-Wave hub for Alexa voice control).

This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe installation, setup, and operation of your GE Z-Wave Smart Switch.

2. Safety Information

  • WARNING: RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK. This product requires electrical installation. Always turn OFF power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before installation.
  • Consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure about any part of the installation process.
  • Do not use this switch to control an appliance that could present a hazardous condition when operated remotely or unattended (e.g., sunlamp, sauna, etc.).
  • For indoor use only.
  • Ensure all wiring connections are secure and properly insulated.
  • Operating temperature range: 32-104°F (0-40°C).

3. Package Contents

4. Features

5. Installation

Before you begin: Read all safety information. If you are uncomfortable with electrical wiring, consult a qualified electrician.

5.1 Pre-Installation Steps

  1. Turn OFF Power: Locate the circuit breaker or fuse box that controls the light switch you intend to replace. Turn off the power to that circuit. Verify power is off by attempting to turn on the light controlled by the switch.
  2. Remove Wall Plate: Unscrew and remove the existing wall plate.
  3. Remove Existing Switch: Carefully unscrew the existing switch from the wall box. Gently pull the switch out of the box, but do not disconnect any wires yet.
  4. Identify Wires: Identify and label the following wires connected to your existing switch:
    • Line Wire (Hot): Typically black, connected to the power source.
    • Load Wire: Typically black, connected to the light fixture.
    • Neutral Wire: Typically white, often bundled with other white wires in the back of the box. A neutral wire is required for this smart switch.
    • Ground Wire: Typically bare copper or green.
    • Traveler Wire (for 3-way/4-way installations): If applicable, usually a different color (e.g., red).
  5. Disconnect Wires: Once identified and labeled, carefully disconnect the wires from the existing switch.

5.2 Wiring the GE Z-Wave Smart Switch

The GE Z-Wave Smart Switch uses screw terminals for secure connections. Ensure all wire insulation is stripped back approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) before inserting into the terminals.

  1. Ground Wire: Connect the bare copper or green ground wire to the GREEN terminal. Tighten the screw.
  2. Line Wire: Connect the labeled Line (hot) wire to one of the BLACK terminals. Tighten the screw.
  3. Load Wire: Connect the labeled Load wire to the other BLACK terminal. Tighten the screw.
  4. Neutral Wire: If your wall box has a bundle of white wires, remove the wire nut and add a pigtail wire (not included) to the bundle. Connect the other end of this pigtail wire to the SILVER terminal on the smart switch. Tighten the screw. If a neutral wire is not present, this device cannot be installed.
  5. Traveler Wire (for 3-way/4-way installations only): If installing in a multi-way configuration with a GE-branded Add-On Switch (Model 12723), connect the traveler wire to the GOLD terminal. Ensure the protective tape is removed from the gold terminal before connecting. If not using an Add-On Switch, leave the protective tape on the gold terminal.

5.3 Completing the Installation

  1. Carefully push the wired switch back into the wall box, ensuring no wires are pinched.
  2. Secure the switch to the wall box using the provided screws.
  3. Attach the new wall plate (sold separately).
  4. Restore Power: Turn the power back ON at the circuit breaker or fuse box.

6. Setup (Z-Wave Pairing)

To enable smart control, you must pair your GE Z-Wave Smart Switch with a compatible Z-Wave certified gateway (hub).

  1. Initiate Pairing on Hub: Follow the instructions provided with your Z-Wave certified gateway to put it into "inclusion" or "pairing" mode.
  2. Pair the Switch: Once your controller is ready, press and release the top or bottom of the paddle on the GE Z-Wave Smart Switch. The blue LED indicator will flash to confirm pairing initiation.
  3. Confirm Pairing: Your Z-Wave controller should confirm successful inclusion of the smart switch into the network.
  4. Refresh Network: After successful pairing, it is recommended to refresh your Z-Wave network within your hub's software to optimize performance and ensure all devices are properly recognized.

7. Operation

7.1 Manual Control

  • Turn ON: Press the top of the paddle to turn the connected light or appliance ON.
  • Turn OFF: Press the bottom of the paddle to turn the connected light or appliance OFF.

7.2 Smart Control via Z-Wave Hub

Once paired with your Z-Wave hub, you can control the switch using your hub's mobile application, web interface, or integrated voice assistants (e.g., Alexa, Google Assistant, if supported by your hub).

  • Remote On/Off: Use your Z-Wave app to turn the switch ON or OFF from anywhere.
  • Scheduling: Create schedules to automatically turn lights ON or OFF at specific times.
  • Scenes: Integrate the switch into custom scenes with other Z-Wave devices (e.g., "Good Morning" scene turns on lights and opens blinds).
  • Voice Control: If your Z-Wave hub supports voice assistants, you can use voice commands to control the switch (e.g., "Alexa, turn on the living room light").

8. Troubleshooting
