Setup

1. Initial Winding

Your TAG Heuer Grand Carrera watch is equipped with an automatic movement. It winds itself through the motion of your wrist. If the watch has stopped or has not been worn for an extended period, it may require manual winding to initiate operation.

  • To manually wind, unscrew the crown (if applicable) and turn it clockwise approximately 30-40 times.
  • The second hand should begin to move.

2. Setting the Time and Date

The crown is used to set the time and date. Always ensure the watch is not in a water-resistant state (crown pushed in and screwed down) before adjusting.

  1. Unscrew the crown: Gently unscrew the crown counter-clockwise until it springs out to position 1.
  2. Set the date: Pull the crown out to position 2. Turn the crown clockwise or counter-clockwise to adjust the date. Avoid setting the date between 9 PM and 3 AM, as this can damage the movement. If the current time falls within this range, set the time outside this range first, adjust the date, then reset the time.
  3. Set the time: Pull the crown out to position 3. Turn the crown to move the hands clockwise until the correct time is displayed. Ensure the AM/PM is correctly set by observing if the date changes when passing midnight.
  4. Secure the crown: Once the time and date are set, push the crown back into position 1 and screw it down clockwise firmly against the case to ensure water resistance.

Operating the Chronograph

The chronograph function allows for precise measurement of elapsed time. Your watch features a 1/10th second chronograph.

  1. Start: Press the upper push-button to start the chronograph. The chronograph second hand and subdial hands will begin to move.
  2. Stop: Press the upper push-button again to stop the chronograph. The elapsed time will be indicated by the chronograph hands.
  3. Reset: After stopping, press the lower push-button to reset the chronograph hands to their zero positions.
  4. Intermediate Time (Split Time): While the chronograph is running, press the lower push-button to display an intermediate time. The chronograph hands will stop, but the timing continues internally. Press the lower push-button again to catch up to the ongoing time.

Using the Tachymeter

The tachymeter scale on the bezel can be used to measure speed over a known distance (e.g., 1 kilometer or 1 mile) or to measure production rates.

  • Speed Measurement: Start the chronograph at the beginning of the measured distance. Stop the chronograph when the distance is completed. The number on the tachymeter scale corresponding to the chronograph second hand's position indicates the average speed per hour.
  • Production Rate: Start the chronograph when an operation begins. Stop it after one unit of work is completed. The number on the tachymeter scale corresponding to the chronograph second hand's position indicates the number of units produced per hour.

Maintenance

Cleaning

To maintain the appearance of your watch, clean it regularly with a soft, dry cloth. For titanium and rubber components, a slightly damp cloth can be used. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.

Water Resistance

This watch is water resistant to 30 meters (99 feet). This rating means it can withstand splashes of water and rain. It is not suitable for showering, swimming, diving, or submersion in water. Always ensure the crown is fully screwed down to maintain water resistance.

Storage

When not wearing your watch, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strong magnetic fields. The original manufacturer box provides suitable protection.

Troubleshooting

  • Watch not running: If the watch has stopped, it may need to be manually wound. Follow the "Initial Winding" instructions in the Setup section. If the issue persists, professional service may be required.
  • Date not changing: Ensure the time is set correctly, especially the AM/PM cycle. If the date is set between 9 PM and 3 AM, it may not change properly. Adjust the time outside this range, then reset the date and time.
  • Chronograph not resetting to zero: This may indicate a need for calibration or service. Consult a qualified watchmaker.
