Model: 400-004

1. Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the safe and effective use of the Pro'sKit 400-004 Multi-Modular Cable Tester. This device is designed to test various modular cables, including RJ45, RJ12, and RJ11, for common wiring faults.

Key features of the Pro'sKit 400-004 include:

  • Compatibility with RJ45, RJ12, and RJ11 connectors.
  • Ability to detect straight-through, crossed, and miswired cable configurations.
  • Includes a remote terminator for testing already installed cables.

2. Product Overview

Image 1: Pro'sKit 400-004 Multi-Modular Cable Tester and Remote Terminator.

This image displays the Pro'sKit 400-004 Multi-Modular Cable Tester. On the left is the main testing unit, featuring ports for 8P8C (RJ45), 6P6C (RJ12), and 4P4C (RJ11) connectors, a power button, and LED indicators for individual pin status (1&8, 2&4&7, 3&4&6, 4&6&5). Below these are status LEDs indicating 'ALL GREEN - OK - STRAIGHTWIRED', 'ALL RED - OK - CROSSWIRED', and 'MIX OR NO LIGHT - MISWIRED'. On the right is the smaller Modular Cable Terminator, with corresponding LEDs for RJ12, RJ11, and RJ45, showing pin status and test results (Green Light - Straightwire, Red Light - Crosswire, Mix or no light - Miswire).

3. Setup

3.1 Battery Installation

The Pro'sKit 400-004 is battery-powered. To install or replace batteries:

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the main tester unit.
  2. Remove the cover by sliding or unscrewing it (refer to the device for specific mechanism).
  3. Insert the required batteries, observing correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Replace the battery compartment cover securely.

3.2 Connecting Cables

To prepare for testing, connect the cable to be tested:

  1. Plug one end of the cable into the appropriate port (RJ45, RJ12, or RJ11) on the main tester unit.
  2. Plug the other end of the cable into the corresponding port on the remote terminator unit. For testing installed cables, the remote terminator can be detached and placed at the far end of the cable run.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Powering On/Off

Press the 'POWER' button located on the main tester unit to turn the device ON. Press it again to turn the device OFF.

4.2 Performing a Test

Once the cable is connected and the device is powered on, the tester will automatically begin scanning the cable pairs. The LEDs on both the main unit and the remote terminator will illuminate sequentially, indicating the status of each wire.

4.3 Interpreting Test Results

Observe the LED indicators on both the main tester unit and the remote terminator to determine the cable's status:

  • ALL GREEN - OK / Green Light: Indicates a straight-wired cable with no faults. All corresponding LEDs on both units should light up in sequence.
  • ALL RED - OK / Red Light: Indicates a cross-wired (crossover) cable. All corresponding LEDs on both units should light up in sequence, but the pattern may indicate a crossover.
  • MIX OR NO LIGHT / Mix or no light: Indicates a miswired cable, open circuit, or short circuit. This can manifest as some LEDs not lighting up, lighting up out of sequence, or a combination of green and red lights.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the casing or internal components.

5.2 Storage

Store the cable tester in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.

5.3 Battery Replacement

Replace batteries when the LED indicators become dim or the device fails to power on. Refer to section 3.1 for battery installation instructions.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Device does not power on:
Check battery installation and ensure batteries are fresh.
  • No LEDs light up during test:
Verify that the cable is properly connected to both the main unit and the remote terminator. Ensure the cable itself is not severely damaged.
  • Inconsistent or flickering LED readings:
Ensure cable connectors are fully seated. Check for loose connections or damaged cable ends.
  • Incorrect test result (e.g., straight-through cable shows miswire):
Confirm the cable type you are testing (e.g., standard Ethernet, crossover Ethernet) matches your expectation for the wiring.
