Orion StarBlast 6i IntelliScope Reflector Telescope User Manual

Model: 27191

1. Introduction

The Orion StarBlast 6i IntelliScope Reflector Telescope is designed for both beginning astronomers and seasoned hobbyists. Its intelligent, user-friendly design allows for easy navigation of the night sky. The included IntelliScope Computerized Object Locator provides guidance to over 14,000 celestial objects. Featuring 150mm parabolic mirror optics, this telescope delivers detailed views of the Moon, planets, and various deep-sky objects. The sturdy swivel base comes pre-assembled, ensuring a straightforward setup process.

This compact telescope offers excellent grab-and-go portability, weighing approximately 23.5 lbs. Its 750mm focal length (f/5.0) optics are optimized for contrast-rich views of brighter deep-sky objects such as nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: NEVER look directly at the Sun through your telescope or its finder scope – even for an instant – without a professionally made solar filter that completely covers the front of the instrument. Permanent eye damage could result.

Always ensure the telescope is placed on a stable, level surface to prevent tipping. Keep all optical components clean and free from dust. Store the telescope in a dry, secure location when not in use.

3. Package Contents

Upon unpacking, verify that all components listed below are present:

4. Setup

The Dobsonian mount comes pre-assembled. However, the IntelliScope components and optical tube require attachment. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove all components from their packaging. Keep all original packaging for potential future transport or storage.
  2. Attaching the Optical Tube: Secure the reflector telescope optical tube to the Dobsonian mount using the provided mounting rings and hardware. Ensure the tube is firmly seated and balanced.
  3. Installing the EZ Finder II: Attach the EZ Finder II aiming device to its designated bracket on the optical tube. This will be used for initial alignment.
  4. Connecting the IntelliScope Hand Controller: Connect the IntelliScope hand controller to the port on the Dobsonian mount. Ensure the connection is secure. The hand controller will guide you through object location.
  5. Eyepiece Rack Installation: Attach the eyepiece rack to the mount for convenient storage of your eyepieces.
  6. Initial Alignment (IntelliScope): The IntelliScope function requires calibration. This typically involves aligning the telescope with two known bright stars. Refer to the detailed instructions in the IntelliScope manual for precise steps. Ensure the telescope is on a level surface for accurate calibration.
  7. Aligning the EZ Finder II: During daylight, point the main telescope at a distant, stationary object (e.g., a telephone pole). Look through the EZ Finder II and adjust its alignment screws until the red dot is centered on the same object seen in the main telescope's eyepiece.

5. Operation

Using your Orion StarBlast 6i IntelliScope Reflector Telescope involves a combination of manual movement and computerized guidance.

5.1. Locating Objects with IntelliScope

After successful calibration, the IntelliScope hand controller will assist you in finding celestial objects. Select an object from the database, and the controller will display directional arrows (left/right, up/down) and coordinate numbers. Manually move the telescope until the numbers approach zero and the arrows disappear, indicating you are pointed at the desired object.

5.2. Viewing and Tracking

Once an object is located, insert an eyepiece into the focuser. Start with the 25mm eyepiece for a wider field of view, then switch to the 10mm eyepiece for higher magnification if desired. Adjust the focuser until the image is sharp.

Remember that celestial objects appear to move across the night sky due to Earth's rotation. You will need to make continuous, small manual adjustments to keep objects centered in your eyepiece. This manual tracking is an integral part of using a Dobsonian telescope and enhances your understanding of celestial mechanics.

5.3. Eyepiece Selection

The included 25mm and 10mm Sirius Plossl eyepieces provide good starting magnifications. Experiment with both to see which is best for different objects. The 25mm eyepiece offers a wider field of view, ideal for larger deep-sky objects or initial object acquisition. The 10mm eyepiece provides higher magnification, suitable for detailed views of the Moon and planets.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your telescope.

  • Cleaning Optics: Dust on the primary mirror or eyepieces can degrade image quality. Use a soft brush or compressed air to remove loose dust. For stubborn spots, use a specialized optical cleaning solution and lens tissue. Avoid touching optical surfaces with your fingers.
  • Collimation: Reflector telescopes require occasional collimation (alignment of mirrors) to maintain sharp images. The primary mirror's center is clearly marked to aid in this process. Refer to the detailed collimation instructions in the main manual for your specific model.
  • Storage: When not in use, cover the telescope with dust caps and store it in a cool, dry place. If transporting, consider using the original packaging or a dedicated travel case to protect components from damage.
  • Battery Replacement: The IntelliScope hand controller is battery-powered. Replace batteries as needed to ensure continuous operation.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Fuzzy or unclear imagesOut of focus; poor collimation; atmospheric conditions; dirty optics.Adjust focuser. Check and adjust mirror collimation. Wait for better viewing conditions. Clean optics carefully.
IntelliScope not locating objects accuratelyIncorrect initial alignment; unlevel surface; encoder issues.Re-perform the two-star alignment procedure. Ensure the telescope is on a level surface. Check IntelliScope cable connections.
Objects drift out of view quicklyEarth's rotation. This is normal for manual Dobsonian mounts. Make continuous, small manual adjustments to track objects.
No power to IntelliScope controllerDead batteries; loose connection.Replace the 9V battery in the hand controller. Check the cable connection to the mount.
