5. Setup and Placement
5.1 Unpacking
Carefully remove the subwoofer from its packaging. Due to its weight (approximately 68 lbs / 30.8 kg), it is recommended to have assistance during unpacking and placement to prevent injury or damage to the unit.
5.2 Subwoofer Placement
The placement of your subwoofer significantly impacts its performance. Experiment with different locations to find the best bass response in your listening environment. Generally, corner placement can enhance bass output, while placement along a wall can provide a more balanced sound. Ensure the subwoofer is placed on a stable, level surface.

5.3 Connecting the Subwoofer
The XLS-15S offers multiple connection options:
- LFE Input (Recommended for AV Receivers): Connect a single RCA cable from the LFE or Subwoofer Pre-Out jack of your AV receiver to the LFE input on the subwoofer. This connection bypasses the subwoofer's internal crossover, allowing your receiver to manage bass management.
- Line Level Inputs (RCA): For stereo receivers or preamplifiers without a dedicated LFE output, connect RCA cables from the pre-out jacks of your source component to the L&R Line Level Inputs on the subwoofer.
- Speaker Level Inputs: If your amplifier or receiver does not have line-level outputs, connect speaker wires from your amplifier's main speaker outputs to the Speaker Level Inputs on the subwoofer. Then, connect speaker wires from the subwoofer's Speaker Level Outputs to your main speakers. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -).
After making all audio connections, plug the power cord into the subwoofer and then into a suitable AC outlet.
6. Operation
6.1 Powering On/Off
The XLS-15S features an Auto-On Sensing function. When enabled, the subwoofer will automatically power on when it detects an audio signal and enter standby mode after a period of inactivity. A manual power switch may also be present for complete power disconnection.
6.2 Adjusting Volume (Level Control)
Use the Adjustable Level Control knob on the subwoofer to match its output volume with your main speakers. Start with the control at a low setting and gradually increase it until the bass blends seamlessly with the rest of your audio system without overpowering it.
6.3 Crossover Frequency Adjustment
The subwoofer includes a Continuously Variable Crossover from 50 Hz to 150 Hz. This control determines the highest frequency the subwoofer will reproduce. Adjust this setting to ensure a smooth transition between the subwoofer and your main speakers. If your main speakers are small, set the crossover higher (e.g., 100-120 Hz). If your main speakers are large and produce good bass, set it lower (e.g., 60-80 Hz). If using the LFE input, this control is typically bypassed, and bass management is handled by your AV receiver.
6.4 Polarity Switch
The User Selected Polarity Switch (0° or 180°) helps to ensure that the subwoofer's output is in phase with your main speakers. Experiment with both settings while listening to music with strong bass. Choose the setting that provides the most impactful and coherent bass response.
7. Maintenance
To maintain the appearance and performance of your XLS-15S subwoofer:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the cabinet. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents.
- Grille: The grille can be gently removed for cleaning if necessary. Use a soft brush or vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove dust.
- Ventilation: Periodically check that the ventilation openings are clear of dust and debris.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your subwoofer, refer to the following common solutions:
