Introduction
This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the safe and effective operation of the TEMPO Communications 521A Irrigation Sprinkler Valve Locator Tool. The 521A is designed to assist professionals in locating buried wires and valves within irrigation systems, offering precision and reliability for troubleshooting and maintenance tasks. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the device.
Safety Information
- Always ensure the transmitter is connected to a de-energized circuit. Connecting to an active circuit can cause damage to the device and potential injury.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by site conditions.
- Keep the device away from water and extreme temperatures unless specified for such conditions.
- Do not attempt to modify or repair the device. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
- Store the device and its components in the provided carry case to prevent damage.

Product Overview
The 521A system consists of a transmitter, a receiver, and a headset, all housed in a protective carry case. Understanding each component is crucial for effective operation.

Transmitter (521-T)
The transmitter generates a signal that is sent through the wire being traced. It features an adjustable output power dial and a battery test function.

Receiver (521-R)
The receiver detects the signal emitted by the transmitter, allowing for the tracing of buried wires and the pinpointing of valves. It includes a loudspeaker and a port for the headset.
Headset (HS-1)
The rugged headset provides clear audio feedback from the receiver, helping to block ambient noise for improved signal detection.
Setup
- Battery Installation: The 521A requires batteries for both the transmitter and receiver. Open the battery compartments and insert the specified alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity. The product does not include batteries.
- Transmitter Connection: Connect the transmitter's leads to the wire you intend to trace. One lead should be connected to the irrigation wire, and the other to a good ground stake. Ensure a secure connection.
- Receiver Assembly: Attach the receiver to its probe handle.
- Headset Connection: Plug the HS-1 headset into the receiver's audio jack for enhanced signal clarity.

Operating Instructions
1. Preparing the Transmitter
- Ensure the irrigation system is turned off and the wire to be traced is de-energized.
- Connect the red lead of the transmitter to the irrigation wire.
- Connect the black lead of the transmitter to a suitable ground point, such as a metal stake driven into the earth or a known good ground.
- Turn the transmitter ON.
- Perform a battery test by rotating the output power dial. A reading between 4 and 8 indicates sufficient battery power.
- Adjust the output power dial to a setting that provides a clear signal without excessive bleed-over to adjacent wires. Start with a lower setting and increase if needed.
2. Using the Receiver to Trace Wires
- Turn the receiver ON.
- Hold the receiver vertically with the tip near the ground, directly above the suspected path of the buried wire.
- Listen for the audio signal through the loudspeaker or headset. The signal will be strongest directly over the wire.
- Move the receiver slowly along the suspected path. The signal will decrease as you move away from the wire and increase as you move closer.
- To pinpoint the exact location, sweep the receiver from side to side. The peak signal indicates the wire's position.

3. Pinpointing Valves (Hotspot Signal Detection)
When tracing a wire, a significant increase in signal strength, often accompanied by a distinct change in tone, indicates the presence of a valve solenoid. This "hotspot" signal allows for precise valve location.
- As you trace the wire, pay close attention to sudden increases in signal intensity.
- Once a hotspot is detected, move the receiver in a small circular or grid pattern around the area to find the exact center of the strongest signal. This will be the location of the valve.

Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe down the transmitter and receiver with a damp cloth after each use. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Always store the 521A system in its original carry case in a dry, cool place when not in use.
- Battery Care: Remove batteries from both the transmitter and receiver if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
- Inspection: Periodically inspect all cables and connections for signs of wear or damage. Replace damaged components as necessary.
Troubleshooting
- No Signal:
- Check battery levels in both transmitter and receiver. Replace if low.
- Ensure all connections are secure and correct.
- Verify the wire being traced is de-energized and has a good ground connection.
- Increase the transmitter's output power setting.
- Weak or Intermittent Signal:
- Ensure the ground connection is optimal.
- Increase transmitter output power.
- Check for excessive moisture or highly conductive soil conditions which can attenuate the signal.
- Ensure the receiver is held vertically and close to the ground.
- Difficulty Pinpointing Valve:
- Ensure the transmitter is connected directly to the valve wire, not a common wire.
- Slow down your sweeping motion and listen carefully for the distinct hotspot signal.
- Adjust the transmitter's output power to a lower setting if the signal is too broad.
