Setup
Before playing your new Cremona SV-130 violin, some initial setup is required to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
1. Initial Inspection:
Carefully remove the violin and its components from the case. Inspect all parts for any visible damage from shipping. Ensure the bridge is present and undamaged. The bridge is typically packed separately to prevent damage during transit.

2. Bridge Placement:
The bridge is not permanently attached and must be carefully placed. Position the bridge upright between the f-holes, ensuring the feet of the bridge align with the inner nicks of the f-holes. The side of the bridge with the higher arch is for the E string, and the lower arch is for the G string. Ensure the bridge stands perpendicular to the violin's top, not leaning forward or backward.

3. Rosin Application to Bow:
The bow hair requires rosin to create friction with the strings and produce sound. Take the provided rosin and rub it firmly along the bow hair from frog to tip, several times. New bows may require more rosin initially. You should see a fine white powder on the bow hair. Avoid touching the bow hair with your fingers as oils can prevent rosin from adhering.

4. Tuning:
The Cremona SV-130 comes with D'Addario Prelude strings, known for their stability. Tune the violin using the pegs in the pegbox for large adjustments and the fine tuners on the tailpiece for small, precise adjustments. The standard tuning for a violin is G, D, A, E (from lowest to highest string). Use a digital tuner or a piano for accurate pitch.
Operating
Proper technique is crucial for producing good sound and preventing strain. This section provides basic guidance on holding and playing your violin.
Holding the Violin:
Place the violin on your left shoulder, resting the chinrest under your chin and the shoulder rest (if used) on your shoulder. The scroll should point away from your body. Your head should be comfortably turned to the left, holding the violin securely without excessive tension.
Holding the Bow:
Hold the bow with your right hand. Your thumb should be bent and rest on the frog, opposite your middle finger. Your index finger should rest on the stick, providing balance and control. The other fingers should curve naturally over the frog. Maintain a relaxed grip.
Basic Playing:
Draw the rosined bow across the strings, maintaining a consistent speed and pressure. Practice drawing straight bows parallel to the bridge. Use your left-hand fingers to press down on the strings against the fingerboard to change pitch. Start with open strings and simple scales.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance will preserve the condition and sound quality of your violin.
Cleaning:
- After each use, wipe down the violin's body, strings, and fingerboard with a soft, dry cloth to remove rosin dust and oils.
- Periodically clean the bow stick with a dry cloth. Avoid getting moisture on the bow hair.
String Care:
- Strings should be replaced periodically, typically every 6-12 months depending on usage, or if they break or lose their tone.
- When replacing strings, change them one at a time to maintain tension on the bridge and soundpost.
Storage:
- Always store the violin in its case when not in use to protect it from dust, humidity changes, and accidental damage.
- Store the case in a stable environment, away from extreme temperatures or humidity fluctuations.

Troubleshooting
Here are some common issues and their potential solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Pegs slipping, not holding tune | Insufficient pressure, dry pegs, or pegs not properly seated. | Push pegs firmly into the pegbox while turning. Apply peg compound (available at music stores) if needed. |
| No sound or weak sound from bow | Insufficient rosin on bow hair, loose bow hair, or incorrect bowing technique. | Apply more rosin. Tighten bow hair (but not excessively). Review bowing technique. |
| Buzzing sound when playing | Loose fine tuner, string not seated correctly in bridge/nut, or soundpost out of place. | Check fine tuners. Ensure strings are properly seated. If soundpost is loose, consult a luthier. |
| Bridge falling down | Strings too loose, or bridge leaning forward/backward. | Re-tension strings carefully. Re-position bridge to be perpendicular to the violin top. |
