Glidecam HD-2000

Glidecam HD-2000 Handheld Stabilizer

Instruction Manual

Introduction

The Glidecam HD-2000 is a lightweight, hand-held camera stabilizer system designed to provide exceptionally smooth, professional-looking footage. This system allows you to move your camera freely while keeping it balanced and isolated from unwanted shakes and bumps. It is suitable for compact cameras weighing between 2 to 6 lbs (0.9-2.7 kg).

This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your Glidecam HD-2000 stabilizer. Please read it thoroughly before use to ensure optimal performance and longevity of your equipment.

Safety Information

  • Always ensure your camera is securely mounted to the stabilizer before operation.
  • Exercise caution when adjusting the stabilizer, especially with counterweights, to prevent injury or damage to equipment.
  • Do not exceed the recommended camera weight capacity of 2 to 6 lbs (0.9-2.7 kg).
  • Keep the stabilizer away from water, extreme temperatures, and corrosive materials.
  • Store the unit in a safe place when not in use to prevent accidental falls or damage.

Package Contents

Upon unpacking your Glidecam HD-2000, please verify that all components are present:

  • Glidecam HD-2000 Stabilizer Unit
  • Counterweight Plates
  • Mounting Hardware
  • Instruction Manual (this document)

Setup

1. Mounting the Camera

  1. Attach your camera to the fine adjustable dynamic camera mounting platform located at the top of the stabilizer. Ensure the camera is centered and securely fastened using the provided mounting hardware.
  2. For optimal balance, position the camera as close to the center of the platform as possible.

2. Initial Balance Adjustment

Achieving proper balance is crucial for the Glidecam HD-2000 to function correctly. This process involves both static and dynamic balancing.

  1. Static Balance:
    • Attach the appropriate number of counterweight plates to the base platform. Start with a moderate amount and adjust as needed.
    • Hold the stabilizer by the handle and observe its tilt. Adjust the camera's position on the mounting platform (forward/backward, left/right) until the camera remains level when held stationary.
    • Adjust the length of the central post (telescoping shaft) to fine-tune the drop time. A good starting point for drop time is 2-3 seconds when the stabilizer is tilted 90 degrees and released.
  2. Dynamic Balance:
    • Once static balance is achieved, gently walk with the stabilizer. If the camera swings excessively from side to side, further fine-tune the position of the camera on the mounting platform or adjust the counterweights.
    • The adjustable convergence, precision, three-axis gimbal allows for precise adjustments to achieve smooth panning and tilting motions.

Operating

1. Holding the Stabilizer

Grip the handle firmly but gently. Avoid gripping too tightly, as this can transfer hand movements to the camera. The handle is designed to allow the stabilizer to pivot freely.

2. Movement Techniques

  • Walking: Bend your knees slightly and walk with a smooth, gliding motion. Avoid heavy footsteps.
  • Panning: Rotate your body from the waist to achieve smooth horizontal camera movements.
  • Tilting: Gently use your free hand to guide the camera up or down, or use subtle wrist movements if the gimbal allows.
  • Low Mode: For shots close to the ground, invert the stabilizer. Ensure it is re-balanced for this configuration if necessary.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe down the stabilizer with a soft, dry cloth after each use. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the Glidecam HD-2000 in a clean, dry environment, preferably in its original packaging or a dedicated case, to protect it from dust and impact.
  • Inspection: Periodically check all screws and connections to ensure they are tight. Inspect the gimbal for smooth operation and lubricate if necessary with a suitable dry lubricant.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Shaky or Unstable Footage Improper balance; too much hand movement; camera too heavy/light. Re-balance the stabilizer carefully (static and dynamic). Practice smooth walking and handling techniques. Ensure camera weight is within 2-6 lbs range.
Stabilizer Drifts to One Side Camera not centered on mounting platform; uneven counterweight distribution. Adjust camera position on the platform. Ensure counterweights are evenly distributed or adjusted to compensate for off-center camera weight.
Difficulty Achieving Balance Incorrect initial setup; camera weight outside range; lack of practice. Review the 'Setup' section. Ensure camera weight is appropriate. Balancing requires patience and practice.
