Setup
1. Battery Installation
The Speedlite 270EX requires two AA batteries for operation. For optimal performance and faster recycling times, it is recommended to use high-quality alkaline or rechargeable Ni-MH batteries.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the side of the flash unit.
- Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction indicated by the arrow to open it.
- Insert two AA batteries according to the polarity indicators (+/-) inside the compartment.
- Close the battery compartment cover securely until it clicks into place.

2. Mounting to Camera
The Speedlite 270EX attaches to your camera's hot shoe.
- Ensure both the camera and the flash unit are turned off.
- Slide the mounting foot of the Speedlite 270EX into the camera's hot shoe until it stops.
- Push the lock lever on the flash unit forward to secure it firmly to the hot shoe. Ensure it is fully locked to prevent accidental detachment.
- To remove, slide the lock lever backward and gently slide the flash unit out of the hot shoe.

Operating Instructions
1. Power On/Off
Locate the ON/OFF switch on the back of the Speedlite 270EX. Slide the switch to the 'ON' position to power on the unit. Slide it to 'OFF' to power it down. The flash unit will automatically turn off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery life.

2. Bounce Flash Function
The Speedlite 270EX features a bounce function, allowing you to direct the flash light upwards to bounce off a ceiling or wall. This creates softer, more natural-looking illumination by diffusing the light.
- Gently push the flash head upwards. It can be tilted up to 90 degrees.
- Select an angle that allows the flash to bounce off a neutral-colored surface (e.g., white ceiling) above or to the side of your subject.
- The camera's E-TTL II / E-TTL autoflash system will automatically adjust the flash output for proper exposure.

3. Coverage Angle Selection (Normal/Tele)
The flash coverage can be switched between Normal (28mm full-frame equivalent) and Tele (50mm full-frame equivalent) by extending or retracting the flash head. This allows the flash to match the angle of view of your lens for more efficient light distribution.
- Normal (28mm equivalent): Flash head retracted. Max Guide No. 72 ft./22m at ISO 100.
- Tele (50mm equivalent): Flash head extended forward. This concentrates the light for longer distances.
4. Wireless Slave Function
The Speedlite 270EX can function as a wireless slave unit when used with an EOS DSLR camera that has a master flash function (e.g., built-in flash with master capability or another Speedlite acting as a master). This allows for off-camera flash photography, providing greater control over lighting direction and quality.
Refer to your camera's instruction manual for details on setting up the master flash function and configuring the Speedlite 270EX as a slave unit.
Maintenance
Cleaning
