Mitutoyo 2414S Dial Indicator User Manual

Model: 2414S

Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the proper use, setup, operation, and maintenance of your Mitutoyo 2414S Dial Indicator. This precision measuring tool is designed to accurately measure small linear distances and object sizes, commonly used in manufacturing, laboratories, and industrial fields.

The Mitutoyo 2414S Dial Indicator features a 0.375" diameter stem, a #4-48 UNF contact point thread mount, and a choice of white or black face for measuring surface variations in fractional inches. It meets ANSI, JIS B7503-1997, and AGD standards.

Product Overview

The Mitutoyo 2414S Dial Indicator is a robust instrument designed for precise measurements. Key components include the dial face, bezel, stem, spindle, and contact point.

Setup

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the dial indicator and all accessories from its storage box. Inspect for any visible damage.
  2. Mounting: The 2414S model offers a choice of flat or lug back for mounting.
    • Flat Back: Clamp-mount on the stem or plate-mount on the rear of the indicator.
    • Lug Back: Use the protrusion with a hole to mount the indicator using a lug or nut and bolt. The lug can typically be rotated to a vertical position if needed.
  3. Contact Point: Ensure the #4-48 UNF contact point is securely attached to the spindle.
  4. Zero Setting: Once mounted, bring the contact point into gentle contact with the reference surface. Rotate the outer bezel to align the dial's zero mark with the indicator hand.

Operation

The dial indicator measures linear displacement. Follow these steps for accurate readings:

  1. Preparation: Ensure the workpiece or surface to be measured is clean and stable.
  2. Positioning: Carefully lower the dial indicator until the contact point touches the surface of the workpiece. Ensure the spindle is perpendicular to the surface for accurate readings.
  3. Reading the Dial: The large hand indicates the primary measurement, while the smaller hand (revolution counter) tracks full revolutions of the large hand.
    • Balanced Dials (e.g., 0-10-0): Used to read the difference from a specific surface reference point.
    • Continuous Dials (e.g., 0-100): Used for direct readings and typically have a larger measurement range. The 2414S has a 0-100 reading.
  4. Measurement: Move the indicator across the surface or apply pressure to measure variations. The hand will move clockwise for increasing measurements and counter-clockwise for decreasing measurements.
  5. Limit Markers: Utilize the adjustable limit markers on the bezel to quickly identify if a measurement falls within a specified tolerance range.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe the dial indicator with a clean, lint-free cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a mild, non-abrasive cleaning solution. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the finish or internal components.
  • Lubrication: The internal mechanisms are factory-lubricated. Do not attempt to lubricate the spindle or other moving parts unless specifically instructed by Mitutoyo service guidelines.
  • Storage: Store the dial indicator in its original storage box or a protective case when not in use. Keep it in a dry, dust-free environment, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
  • Handling: Handle the instrument with care. Avoid dropping or subjecting it to sudden impacts, as this can affect its accuracy and calibration.
  • Calibration: For professional applications, periodic calibration by a certified technician is recommended to ensure continued accuracy.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Indicator hand sticks or moves erratically.Dust or debris in the mechanism; bent spindle; internal damage.Clean the spindle area. If problem persists, contact Mitutoyo service. Do not attempt to disassemble.
Inaccurate readings.Improper zero setting; worn contact point; misaligned mounting; instrument out of calibration.Re-zero the indicator. Check contact point for wear and replace if necessary. Ensure proper mounting. Consider professional calibration.
Bezel difficult to rotate.Dirt accumulation; minor deformation.Clean around the bezel edge. Apply gentle, even pressure when rotating. Avoid forcing.
