Fisher CZ-21 Quicksilver Metal Detector User Manual

Model: CZ21-10

1. Introduction

Welcome to your new Fisher CZ-21 Quicksilver Metal Detector. This advanced device is engineered for both land and underwater treasure hunting, featuring dual-frequency VLF technology for superior target detection and identification. This manual provides essential information for the proper assembly, operation, and maintenance of your detector to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

2. Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety instructions before operating the Fisher CZ-21 Quicksilver Metal Detector.

  • Battery Safety: Use only recommended 9-volt batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries, or different types of batteries. Remove batteries if the unit will not be used for an extended period.
  • Water Safety: While the CZ-21 is waterproof up to 250 feet, ensure all seals and compartments are properly secured before submerging. Do not attempt to open the battery compartment or control housing underwater.
  • Electrical Hazards: Avoid searching near active power lines, electrical cables, or other sources of high voltage. Metal detectors can interfere with or be affected by strong electromagnetic fields.
  • Digging Safety: Always exercise caution when digging. Be aware of local regulations regarding digging and treasure hunting. Avoid damaging property or disturbing natural habitats.
  • Hearing Protection: Prolonged use of headphones at high volumes can cause hearing damage. Adjust volume to a comfortable level.

  • Control Housing: Contains the electronics, controls, and battery compartment.
  • Searchcoil: The circular or elliptical component that detects metal objects. The CZ-21 comes with a 10-inch waterproof searchcoil.
  • Shaft Assembly: Connects the control housing to the searchcoil. It is adjustable for user comfort.
  • Armrest: Provides support and comfort during extended use.
  • Waterproof Headphones: Integrated for clear audio signals in various environments.
  • Pinpoint Button: Used for precise target location.

5. Setup

5.1. Assembly

  1. Attach the searchcoil to the lower shaft using the provided non-metallic bolt and wing nut. Ensure it is secure but allows for slight angle adjustment.
  2. Connect the lower shaft to the middle shaft, and then the middle shaft to the upper shaft. Adjust the length for comfortable operation, ensuring the searchcoil is parallel to the ground when held naturally.
  3. Mount the control housing to the upper shaft. The control housing can also be hip-mounted for reduced arm fatigue.
  4. Wrap the searchcoil cable snugly around the shaft, leaving enough slack near the searchcoil for angle adjustment. Plug the cable connector into the control housing, ensuring a tight, waterproof seal.

5.2. Battery Installation

The CZ-21 requires four 9-volt batteries for operation.

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the control housing.
  2. Carefully unscrew the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert four fresh 9-volt batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Replace the battery compartment cover, ensuring it is securely tightened to maintain the waterproof seal.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1. Powering On/Off

To power on the detector, rotate the VOLUME/BOOST knob clockwise from the 'OFF' position. To power off, rotate it counter-clockwise until it clicks into the 'OFF' position.

6.2. Controls Overview

The CZ-21 features intuitive analog controls:

  • VOLUME/BOOST: Controls the audio output level. Turning it further clockwise engages the 'BOOST' function, which amplifies faint signals from deep targets.
  • SENSITIVITY/BATT TEST: Adjusts the detector's sensitivity to targets. Higher sensitivity increases detection depth but can also increase susceptibility to electrical interference. The 'BATT TEST' position allows you to check battery strength.
  • DISCRIMINATION/AUTO TUNE: Sets the level of metal discrimination. Lower settings detect more metal types, including iron. Higher settings filter out unwanted ferrous targets. The 'AUTO TUNE' position activates the All Metal mode.
  • GROUND: Used for manual ground balancing to compensate for mineralized soil conditions.
  • PINPOINT Button: Press and hold this button to activate the non-motion pinpoint mode, which helps precisely locate the target.

6.3. Operating Modes

The CZ-21 offers two primary operating modes:

6.3.1. Auto-Tune All Metal Mode

Engage this mode by setting the DISCRIMINATION knob to 'AUTO TUNE'. This mode provides maximum sensitivity and depth, detecting all metal types. It is ideal for initial sweeps to cover large areas or when searching for deeply buried targets without discrimination.

6.3.2. Target-ID Mode

This mode is activated when the DISCRIMINATION knob is set to any position other than 'AUTO TUNE'. It allows you to filter out unwanted metals (discrimination) and provides a 3-tone audio response for target identification.

6.4. Ground Balancing

Ground balancing is crucial for stable operation in mineralized soils and saltwater. The CZ-21 uses a manual ground balance system.

  1. Find a clear spot of ground with no metal objects.
  2. Set the DISCRIMINATION knob to 'AUTO TUNE'.
  3. Pump the searchcoil up and down over the ground from about 1 inch to 12 inches.
  4. Adjust the GROUND knob until the audio response is smooth and consistent, with minimal change as you pump the coil.
  5. Once balanced, you can switch back to Target-ID mode if desired.

6.5. Saltwater Compensation

The CZ-21 features automatic saltwater compensation, which helps to cancel out the conductive signals caused by saltwater. This allows for stable and effective operation on beaches and in shallow water without significant interference. Manual ground balancing may still be necessary for highly mineralized wet sand.

6.6. Target Identification (3-Tone Audio)

In Target-ID mode, the CZ-21 provides distinct audio tones to help identify targets:

  • Low Tone: Typically indicates ferrous metals (iron).
  • Mid Tone: Often signals pull tabs, small gold items, or some foil.
  • High Tone: Generally indicates coins, silver, and larger gold items.
  • Bell Tone: A unique bell-like tone alerts users to large, shallow targets, aiding in quick recovery.

6.7. Underwater Operation

The CZ-21 is designed for underwater use up to a depth of 250 feet. Ensure all connections, especially the searchcoil cable and battery compartment cover, are securely tightened before submersion.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, especially in saltwater, rinse the searchcoil and lower shaft with fresh water. Wipe down the control housing with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the detector in a cool, dry place. If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace batteries when the 'BATT TEST' indicator shows low power or when audio signals become weak.
  • Cable Care: Avoid kinking or sharply bending the searchcoil cable. Ensure the cable connection to the control housing remains clean and free of debris.
