The Ritchie RU-90 Voyager Compass is a flush-mount marine compass designed for reliable navigation. Its robust construction and clear display make it suitable for various marine applications.
Safety Information
Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent damage to the compass or injury to yourself:
- Do not expose the compass to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight for prolonged periods when not in use.
- Keep the compass away from strong magnetic fields, such as speakers, motors, or large metal objects, as these can affect accuracy.
- Ensure proper mounting to prevent dislodgement during vessel movement.
- Do not attempt to disassemble the compass. Refer servicing to qualified personnel.
- Clean only with mild soap and water; avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
Package Contents
Verify that all items are present in the package:
- Ritchie RU-90 Voyager Compass Unit
- Mounting Hardware (screws, nuts, washers)
- Installation Template
- Instruction Manual (this document)
Setup and Installation
1. Choosing a Mounting Location
Select a flat, stable surface for flush mounting. The location should be easily visible from the helm and free from magnetic interference. Avoid mounting near speakers, engines, or large ferrous metal objects.
2. Mounting Procedure
- Using the provided template, mark the cutout area and screw holes on the chosen mounting surface.
- Carefully cut out the marked opening. Ensure the edges are smooth.
- Drill pilot holes for the mounting screws.
- Insert the compass unit into the cutout.
- Secure the compass using the provided mounting hardware. Do not overtighten.

Figure 2: Compass Dimensions and Mounting Profile
This diagram illustrates the precise dimensions required for flush mounting, including the overall diameter, height above the mounting surface, and the depth required below the surface. Ensure your chosen location accommodates these measurements.
3. Lighting Kit Installation (Optional)
If you have purchased the optional Voyager Lighting Kit (SKU VL-100), follow the instructions provided with that kit for wiring and installation. Ensure proper polarity when connecting to your vessel's electrical system.
Operating Instructions
Reading the Compass
The Ritchie RU-90 features a direct-read compass card. Your current heading is indicated by the yellow lubber line at the top of the compass. The compass card rotates to show the magnetic bearing relative to your vessel's bow.
- Cardinal Points: N (North), E (East), S (South), W (West) are clearly marked.
- Degrees: The compass card is marked in 30-degree increments with smaller tick marks for 5-degree intervals.
- Lubber Lines: In addition to the main lubber line, there are four white lubber lines indicating headings at 45 and 90 degrees off to the West or East of the present heading. These are useful for maintaining courses relative to the wind or for quick tacking maneuvers.
Compass Deviation and Compensation
Magnetic compasses can be affected by magnetic fields within the vessel, causing "deviation." The RU-90 compass is equipped with built-in compensators to correct for minor deviations. For accurate navigation, it is recommended to have your compass professionally compensated after installation, or perform a deviation swing yourself if you are experienced.
Note: Large changes in equipment or location of magnetic materials on board may require re-compensation.
Maintenance
The Ritchie RU-90 Voyager Compass requires minimal maintenance to ensure long-term accuracy and readability:
- Cleaning: Clean the compass dome and housing with a soft cloth and mild soap and water solution. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and dry. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or petroleum-based products, as these can damage the plastic.
- Inspection: Periodically inspect the mounting screws to ensure they are secure. Check for any signs of damage or leaks in the compass housing.
- Fluid Level: The compass is filled with a damping fluid. A small air bubble may appear due to temperature changes; this is normal. If the bubble becomes excessively large or if fluid leakage is observed, contact Ritchie customer support.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Compass reads inaccurately or swings erratically. | Magnetic interference from nearby objects (speakers, electronics, metal). | Relocate the compass away from sources of magnetic interference. Perform compass compensation. |
| Large air bubble inside the compass dome. | Extreme temperature fluctuations; minor air bubbles are normal. Significant fluid loss. | If the bubble is excessively large or growing, contact Ritchie customer support for assistance. |
| Compass card sticks or moves sluggishly. | Physical obstruction or internal damage. | Ensure no external objects are impeding the compass. If the issue persists, contact Ritchie customer support. |
