3. Setup
- Connect Air Hose: Attach the small end of an Iwata airbrush hose (not included) to the airbrush. Connect the other end of the air hose to your air source (compressor or propellant can).
- Prepare Paint: Ensure your paint is properly thinned for airbrushing. The HP-C Plus is suitable for various paint types, including solvent-based.
- Load Paint: Open the lid of the gravity-feed cup and carefully pour the prepared paint into the cup. Do not overfill; about half full is often sufficient. Ensure the breather hole in the cup lid remains clear to prevent intermittent spray.
- Adjust Preset Handle: The quick-flush cutaway preset handle allows you to set the maximum backward travel of the trigger, controlling the paint flow. Wind this in to limit paint flow for finer work, or out for broader sprays. This is a useful feature for beginners to maintain consistent lines.
4. Operating Instructions
The Iwata HP-C Plus is a dual-action airbrush, meaning the trigger controls both air and paint flow independently.
- Start Airflow: Press down on the trigger to release air.
- Control Paint Flow: While holding the trigger down for air, pull the trigger back to release paint. The further back you pull, the more paint is released.
- Spraying Techniques:
- Broad Sprays: Hold the airbrush further from the surface and pull the trigger back further for more paint.
- Fine Lines/Detail: Hold the airbrush closer to the surface, limit the trigger's backward travel (using the preset handle if desired), and use minimal paint flow. Removing the air cap can help monitor the needle for finer detail.
- Dots: With the airbrush close to the surface and minimal paint flow, quickly press and release the trigger for small dots.
- Optimal Working Pressure: The recommended optimal working pressure is between 15-25 psi. Adjust as needed based on paint consistency and desired effect.
5. Maintenance
Regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial for the longevity and performance of your airbrush.
- Cleaning After Each Use:
- Empty any remaining paint from the cup.
- Add appropriate cleaning solution (e.g., water for acrylics, solvent for solvent-based paints) to the cup.
- Spray the cleaning solution through the airbrush until it runs clear.
- Use a brush or cotton swab to clean the inside of the paint cup.
- Deep Cleaning (Periodically):
- Disassemble the airbrush, carefully removing the needle, nozzle, and air cap.
- Clean all components with appropriate cleaning solution and specialized airbrush cleaning tools. Be extremely gentle with the needle and nozzle as they are delicate.
- Ensure the breather hole in the cup lid is clear of any paint residue.
- Reassemble the airbrush, ensuring all parts are securely but not overtightened.
- Lubrication: Apply a tiny drop of Iwata Lube (included) to the trigger mechanism and the needle for smooth operation.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No paint flow | Clogged nozzle/needle, paint too thick, air cap blocked | Clean nozzle/needle, thin paint, clear air cap breather hole |
| Inconsistent spray / Spattering | Tip dry, loose nozzle, low air pressure, paint consistency | Clean tip, tighten nozzle, increase air pressure, adjust paint thinning |
| Air bubbles in paint cup | Damaged nozzle, loose nozzle, bent needle tip | Inspect/replace nozzle, tighten nozzle, straighten/replace needle |
| Trigger sticky | Lack of lubrication, paint residue in mechanism | Apply Iwata Lube, deep clean trigger mechanism |
