Instruction Manual

Product Overview

Watco Danish Oil is a unique blend of penetrating oil and varnish designed to harden within the wood, rather than on its surface. This oil-based formula penetrates deep into wood pores, providing protection from within and enhancing the natural look and feel of the wood. It creates the rich, warm glow of a traditional hand-rubbed finish. Many projects can be completed quickly, often in less than an hour, by simply brushing or wiping on and wiping off the product.

Preparation

  1. Surface Condition: Ensure the wood surface is clean, dry, and free of any dust, grease, wax, or old finishes.
  2. Sanding: For previously sealed, waxed, or polished surfaces, strip and sand the wood to bare wood to allow proper penetration of the Danish Oil. Finish sanding with 180-220 grit sandpaper.
  3. Cleanliness: After sanding, thoroughly remove all sanding dust with a vacuum or tack cloth.
  4. Shake Can: Shake the Watco Danish Oil can thoroughly before opening to ensure proper mixing of components.
  5. Protect Work Area: Cover surrounding areas with drop cloths to protect from drips and stains.
  6. Gather Supplies: Have disposable gloves, clean lint-free cloths, or a quality natural bristle brush ready.

Application Instructions

Follow these steps for optimal results:

  1. Apply Liberally: Pour Watco Danish Oil directly onto a clean, lint-free cloth or the wood surface. Apply the oil liberally and evenly, ensuring the entire surface is saturated.
  2. Spread Evenly: Use the cloth or a natural bristle brush to spread the oil, working it into the wood grain. Ensure thorough and even coverage.
  3. Allow Penetration: Let the oil penetrate the wood for at least 30 minutes. During this time, the wood will absorb the oil.
  4. Reapply if Needed: If certain areas absorb the oil quickly and appear dry, apply additional oil to those spots to ensure uniform saturation.
  5. Wipe Off Excess: After the penetration time, use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe off all excess oil. Always wipe in the direction of the wood grain. Ensure no wet spots remain on the surface.
  6. Additional Coats: For enhanced protection and a deeper finish, apply 2 to 3 coats. Allow sufficient drying time between coats (refer to product label for specific recoat times).

Drying and Curing

  • Dry to Touch: The finish will be dry to the touch in approximately 6 hours under normal conditions.
  • Full Cure: Allow several days for the finish to fully cure and achieve maximum hardness and durability. Avoid heavy use or placing objects on the surface during the curing period.

Maintenance and Repair

Watco Danish Oil finishes are designed for easy maintenance and repair, allowing for long-lasting beauty of your wood surfaces.

  • Routine Cleaning: Clean finished surfaces with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners.
  • Minor Scuffs and Stains: Most minor scuffs, cup rings, or stains from spills (such as wine) can be easily addressed. Gently sand the affected area with fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 220-grit) in the direction of the grain until the blemish is removed.
  • Reapplication: After sanding, reapply Watco Danish Oil to the repaired area. The new application will blend seamlessly with the original finish, restoring the wood's appearance.
  • Periodic Refresh: For continued protection and to refresh the luster, reapply a thin coat of Watco Danish Oil periodically as needed, especially in high-traffic areas.
