2. Components

The Bandu game set includes the following high-quality components:

  • Unique Wooden Blocks: A collection of various shapes and sizes, including egg-shaped pieces, cones, circles, rods, and bricks. These are designed to make stacking challenging and diverse.
  • Plastic Beans: Used for bidding during gameplay.
  • Game Instructions: This manual provides detailed rules and guidelines for play.

3. Setup

  1. Prepare Playing Area: Choose a flat, stable surface for gameplay. A carpeted area may provide some cushioning for fallen pieces.
  2. Distribute Components:
    • Place all unique wooden blocks in a central "game piece selection area" accessible to all players.
    • Each player receives a limited number of plastic beans. The exact number of beans per player should be determined by the game's specific rules (refer to the original game instructions if available).
    • Each player starts with an initial base for their personal tower.
  3. Determine First Player: Decide who goes first. This can be done by rolling a die, drawing lots, or any other agreed-upon method.

4. Operating Instructions (How to Play)

Bandu is a game of balance, strategy, and bidding. The objective is to be the last player with a standing tower.

4.1 Game Objective

The primary goal is to build and maintain your personal tower without it collapsing. Players are eliminated when their tower falls. The last player with an intact tower wins.

4.2 Player Turn

On your turn, you will select a wooden block from the central game piece selection area and offer it to the player to your right. This initiates a bidding process.

4.3 Bidding Mechanics

  1. Offering a Piece: The active player chooses a piece and offers it to the player on their right.
  2. Bidding to Keep or Pass: The player to whom the piece is offered must decide if they want to keep the piece or pass it.
    • If they want the piece, they bid a certain number of plastic beans to take it.
    • If they do not want the piece, they bid a certain number of plastic beans to pass it to the next player.
  3. Passing the Bid: The bidding continues clockwise around the table. Each subsequent player can either outbid the previous player to take the piece, or outbid them to pass it.
  4. Winning the Bid: The player who makes the highest bid (either to take or to pass) wins the bid.
    • If the bid was to take the piece, that player pays the bid amount in beans and adds the piece to their tower.
    • If the bid was to pass the piece, that player pays the bid amount in beans, and the piece is passed to the next player who must then take it without further bidding.
  5. Running Out of Beans: Players have a limited number of beans. If a player runs out of beans, they must accept any piece offered to them without bidding.

Once a player acquires a piece, they must carefully add it to their personal tower, ensuring it remains stable. The game is highly suspenseful as towers become increasingly unstable.

5. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity of your Bandu game, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Wipe wooden blocks with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Storage: Store all game components in their original box or a suitable container in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, to prevent warping or damage to the wooden pieces.
  • Handling: Handle wooden pieces with care to prevent chipping or breaking.

6. Troubleshooting

Common issues and their resolutions:

  • Tower Instability: If towers frequently fall, encourage players to consider the center of gravity and base stability when placing pieces. Some pieces are inherently more challenging to stack.
  • Lost Pieces: In case of lost wooden blocks or plastic beans, replacements may not be readily available as this is a classic game. Consider using similar household items as substitutes if necessary.
  • Game Feels Repetitive: While Bandu is designed to be different every time, if players desire more variety, consider introducing house rules such as time limits for turns or specific stacking challenges.
