Safety Information

WARNING:

This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm (California Proposition 65). Always use in a well-ventilated area. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves and eye protection. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Refer to the product label for complete safety information and first aid instructions.

Preparation (Setup)

Proper surface preparation is crucial for optimal results.

  1. Ensure the wood surface is dry and free from old finishes in poor condition, paint, wax, grease, polish, dirt, or other foreign matter.
  2. Sand the surface to achieve a smooth, uniform texture. Remove all sanding dust using a cloth lightly dampened with mineral spirits.
  3. If desired, apply a Minwax stain to unfinished wood surfaces. Follow the stain manufacturer's directions for application and drying times before proceeding with polyurethane.

Application (Operating)

Follow these steps for applying Minwax Fast Drying Polyurethane.

  1. Do not shake the can. Stir Minwax Fast Drying Polyurethane thoroughly before and during use to ensure all components are evenly mixed. Stir from the bottom to the top of the can.
  2. Apply a thin, even coat of polyurethane using a high-quality natural bristle brush or foam brush. Apply in the direction of the wood grain.
  3. Allow the first coat to dry for 4-6 hours.
  4. For floor projects or if a smoother finish is desired, lightly sand the dried first coat with 220-grit sandpaper or an equivalent grit pad/screen (specifically designed for sanding between coats). Do not use belt or drum sanders for this step. Remove all sanding dust with a damp cloth.
  5. Apply a second thin coat. If a third coat is desired, repeat the sanding step (step 4) before applying the final coat.

Drying and Curing (Maintenance)

Allow 24 hours after the final coat before light use of the finished surface.

Full cure time may vary depending on environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. Avoid heavy use or placing heavy objects on the surface until the finish is fully cured.

Clean finished surfaces with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth.

Troubleshooting

  • Bubbles: Bubbles are often caused by shaking the can vigorously or applying the finish too thickly. To prevent bubbles, stir gently, apply thin coats, and avoid overworking the finish with the brush.
  • Uneven Finish: An uneven finish can result from improper surface preparation or inconsistent application. Ensure the surface is properly sanded and cleaned, and apply the polyurethane in thin, even strokes. Lightly sanding between coats can help smooth out minor imperfections.
  • Slow Drying: If the finish is drying slowly, ensure adequate ventilation in the work area and that the temperature and humidity are within recommended ranges (check product label for specifics). Applying the finish too thickly can also significantly extend drying times.
