1. Introduction
The Panasonic HDC-SD5 is a compact, high-definition camcorder designed for capturing video in the AVCHD format. It features a 3CCD camera system for vivid color reproduction and 1920 x 1080 pixel full-HD recording. Equipped with a Leica Dicomar lens and Advanced Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S.), this camcorder minimizes blur from hand shake, ensuring clear and stable footage. The HDC-SD5 records directly onto SDHC/SD Memory Cards, offering convenient storage and portability.

2. Setup
2.1 Battery Installation
The HDC-SD5 requires one Lithium-Ion battery. To install the battery:
- Locate the battery compartment on the bottom of the camcorder.
- Open the battery compartment cover.
- Insert the battery, ensuring the contacts align correctly.
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
For extended use or when transferring data via USB, the camcorder operates on AC power. Connect the AC adapter to the camcorder's power input. Note that the camcorder requires a 'fake battery' to be inserted into the battery slot for AC operation, with the power cord routed through a small slot in the cover to allow it to close.
2.2 SD/SDHC Memory Card Insertion
The camcorder records video and still images onto SDHC/SD Memory Cards.
- Locate the SD card slot, which is situated on the bottom of the camcorder, near the battery compartment.
- Open the cover for the SD card slot.
- Insert the SDHC/SD Memory Card with the label facing the correct direction until it clicks into place.
- Close the SD card slot cover.
Always ensure the camcorder is powered off before inserting or removing memory cards to prevent data corruption.
2.3 Initial Power On
After installing the battery or connecting to AC power and inserting a memory card, power on the camcorder using the power button. The 2.7-inch wide-angle LCD monitor will display the initial setup screen, prompting you to set the date, time, and language.

3. Operating the Camcorder
3.1 Basic Recording
To begin recording, ensure the camcorder is in recording mode. The LCD monitor provides a live view of the scene.
- Zoom: Use the zoom lever to adjust the 10x optical zoom.
- Focus Assist: Activate the Focus Assist function to enlarge the center of the image on the LCD, aiding in precise manual focusing.
- Advanced O.I.S.: The built-in Advanced Optical Image Stabilizer automatically compensates for hand shake, providing stable video footage.
- Pre-Rec Function: When activated, the camcorder continuously records three seconds of video into a buffer. When the record button is pressed, these three seconds are added to the beginning of your clip, helping to capture unexpected moments.
- Intelligent Contrast Control: This feature automatically adjusts contrast based on ambient light, preventing washed-out highlights and dark shadows.
- Shooting Modes: Select from various shooting modes such as Digital Photo, Low light, Portrait mode, Sports mode, Spotlight, and Surf & Snow to optimize settings for different environments.
3.2 Playback
The HDC-SD5 offers several options for viewing your recorded content.
- On-Camcorder Playback: Switch the camcorder to playback mode to view videos and photos directly on the 2.7-inch LCD monitor.
- Playback EZ Sync: Connect the camcorder to a compatible Panasonic TV via an HDMI cable. Use the TV's remote control to navigate and play content, following on-screen prompts.
- Direct Viewing with SD Card: Insert the SDHC/SD Memory Card directly into the card slot of select Panasonic plasma TVs to view full-HD AVCHD images. JPEG photos can also be viewed this way.
3.3 Data Transfer and Archiving
To manage and archive your recordings:
- USB Host Function: Connect the HDC-SD5 to Panasonic's optional DVD burner (VW-BN1) via a USB cable. Press a single button to copy recorded video clips from the SDHC/SD Memory Card to a DVD disc in the original AVCHD format. Note that USB connectivity requires AC power.
- HD Writer 2.0 Software: Use the provided "HD Writer 2.0" software to edit full-HD video clips on your computer. You can save video data in either AVCHD or DVD-VIDEO format for playback on Blu-ray Disc players or standard DVD players, respectively.
4. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your camcorder.
- Cleaning the Lens: Use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for optical lenses. Gently wipe the lens surface to remove dust or smudges. Avoid using harsh chemicals.
- Cleaning the Body: Wipe the camcorder body with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water and then wipe dry.
- Battery Care: Store batteries in a cool, dry place. Avoid fully discharging Lithium-Ion batteries frequently. If not using the camcorder for an extended period, remove the battery.
- SD Card Handling: Always handle SDHC/SD Memory Cards carefully. Avoid bending or exposing them to extreme temperatures or moisture. Format cards regularly within the camcorder to maintain performance.
5. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your HDC-SD5 camcorder.
- Camcorder does not power on: Ensure the battery is charged and correctly inserted, or that the AC adapter is properly connected with the 'fake battery' in place.
- Poor video quality in low light: The HDC-SD5 performs best in well-lit conditions. In low light, try using the 'Low light' shooting mode or increasing ambient lighting.
- Awkward port access: Some connection ports (e.g., HDMI, USB) are located under the hand strap or behind the LCD, which can be inconvenient. Ensure sufficient space when connecting cables.
- USB functions not working: USB connectivity, including the USB Host function for the DVD burner, requires the camcorder to be powered by the AC adapter, not just the battery.
- SD card not recognized: Ensure the SDHC/SD Memory Card is fully inserted and not damaged. Try reformatting the card (this will erase all data).
- No viewfinder: The HDC-SD5 does not feature a traditional viewfinder. All framing and playback are done via the 2.7-inch LCD monitor.
