1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your Proxxon 27026 Three Jaw Chuck. This accessory is specifically designed for concentric clamping on the Proxxon Lathe DB 250. Please read these instructions thoroughly before installation and operation to ensure proper function and to prevent damage to the chuck, lathe, or injury to the operator.
2. Safety Instructions
- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, when operating the lathe and using the chuck.
- Ensure the chuck is securely mounted to the lathe spindle before operation. A loose chuck can be extremely dangerous.
- Verify the workpiece is clamped firmly in the jaws. An improperly secured workpiece can be ejected during rotation.
- Never attempt to adjust or remove the chuck or workpiece while the lathe is running. Always power off the lathe and wait for all moving parts to stop.
- Keep hands and clothing clear of rotating parts.
- Do not exceed the maximum rotational speed recommended for your lathe and the chuck.
- Regularly inspect the chuck for any signs of wear, damage, or loose components. Do not use a damaged chuck.
3. Product Overview

4. Setup and Installation
The Proxxon 27026 Three Jaw Chuck is designed for direct attachment to the headstock spindle of the Proxxon Lathe DB 250, which features an M16 x 1 thread.
- Ensure the lathe is powered off and unplugged before beginning installation.
- Clean the spindle threads on the lathe headstock and the internal threads of the chuck to remove any debris or old lubricant.
- Carefully align the chuck's internal M16 x 1 thread with the lathe's headstock spindle thread.
- Thread the chuck onto the spindle by hand, turning clockwise. Ensure it threads smoothly without resistance. Do not force it.
- Tighten the chuck firmly onto the spindle. While it should be hand-tight, some users may prefer a slight additional turn with a strap wrench for extra security, ensuring not to overtighten.
- Verify the chuck is seated flush against the spindle shoulder.
5. Operating Instructions
Clamping a Workpiece
- Insert the chuck wrench into one of the keyholes on the chuck body.
- Rotate the wrench counter-clockwise to open the jaws sufficiently to accommodate your workpiece.
- Insert the workpiece into the chuck, ensuring it is centered and has adequate gripping surface.
- Rotate the wrench clockwise to close the jaws, clamping the workpiece firmly. Ensure all three jaws make even contact with the workpiece. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the workpiece or the chuck.
- Remove the chuck wrench before starting the lathe. Never leave the wrench in the chuck.
Jaw Reversal for Expanded Capacity
The jaws of the Proxxon 27026 chuck can be reversed to accommodate larger diameter workpieces. This allows for clamping capacities of 1/16" - 1 13/32" (1.5 to 32mm) in the standard configuration and 1/2" - 2 14/32" (12 to 65mm) when reversed.
- Ensure the lathe is powered off and unplugged.
- Open the chuck jaws fully using the chuck wrench.
- Carefully remove each jaw by sliding it out of its slot. Note the numbering on the jaws and slots to ensure they are reinstalled in the correct order.
- Flip each jaw over and reinsert it into its corresponding numbered slot. Ensure the serrated gripping surfaces are facing outwards for external clamping.
- Close the jaws slightly with the chuck wrench to ensure they are properly seated and move smoothly.

6. Maintenance
Proper maintenance extends the life and performance of your chuck.
- Cleaning: After each use, clean the chuck to remove any chips, dust, or debris. A brush or compressed air can be used.
- Lubrication: Periodically apply a light machine oil to the jaw slides and the scroll mechanism. This ensures smooth operation and prevents corrosion. Do not over-lubricate, as excess oil can attract debris.
- Inspection: Regularly inspect the jaws for wear or damage. Check the chuck body for cracks or deformities. Ensure the mounting threads are clean and undamaged.
- Storage: Store the chuck in a clean, dry place when not in use to prevent rust and damage.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Proxxon 27026 Three Jaw Chuck, consider the following:
- Jaws not moving smoothly: This often indicates a need for cleaning and lubrication. Disassemble the jaws, clean thoroughly, and apply light machine oil.
- Workpiece not clamping securely: Ensure the jaws are clean and free of debris. Verify the workpiece diameter is within the chuck's capacity. Check for excessive wear on the jaws or scroll mechanism.
- Chuck not threading onto spindle: Check for debris or damage on both the chuck and spindle threads. Ensure correct alignment. Never force the chuck onto the spindle.
For persistent issues, contact Proxxon customer support or a qualified technician.
