Introduction
The Voigtländer Nokton Classic 40mm F1.4 lens is a compact, high-performance manual focus lens designed for exceptional low-light photography and video. This multi-coated lens offers a wide maximum aperture of F1.4, providing excellent light-gathering capabilities and beautiful background blur. It features a Leica M-mount bayonet connection, making it compatible with a range of cameras, often requiring an adapter for specific camera systems.
Setup
1. Unpacking the Lens
Carefully remove the lens from its packaging. Ensure all components, including the front and rear lens caps, are present.

2. Attaching the Lens to Your Camera
This lens features a Leica M-mount. If your camera uses a different mount (e.g., Sony E-mount), a compatible adapter is required. Ensure both the camera body and the lens mount are clean before attachment.
- Remove the rear lens cap from the Voigtländer Nokton Classic 40mm F1.4 lens.
- If using an adapter, attach the adapter to your camera body first. Align the indicator marks on the adapter and the camera body, then twist the adapter clockwise until it clicks into place.
- Align the indicator mark on the lens with the corresponding mark on the adapter (or camera body if no adapter is used).
- Gently insert the lens into the mount and twist it clockwise until it locks securely. Do not force the lens.

Operating the Lens
1. Adjusting Aperture
The lens features an aperture ring with settings from F1.4 to F16. Rotate the aperture ring to select your desired f-stop. The ring clicks at each full stop for precise control.
2. Manual Focusing
The Voigtländer Nokton Classic 40mm F1.4 is a manual focus lens. Rotate the focus ring to achieve sharp focus on your subject. The minimum focusing distance is 0.7 meters (approximately 2.3 feet).

3. Field of View
The 40mm focal length provides a diagonal field of view of 56°, offering a natural perspective suitable for various photographic genres, including street photography and portraits.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning the Lens
To clean the lens elements, use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth specifically designed for optics. For stubborn smudges, apply a small amount of lens cleaning solution to the cloth, not directly to the lens. Avoid touching the glass surfaces with your fingers.
2. Storing the Lens
When not in use, always attach both the front and rear lens caps to protect the lens elements and mount. Store the lens in a dry, dust-free environment, ideally in a lens pouch or camera bag.

Troubleshooting
1. Focus Shift at Smaller Apertures
Some users may experience a slight focus shift at apertures like F2.8 and F4 when focusing on near objects (within 2 meters) with rangefinder cameras. This is a known characteristic of certain lens designs and may not be apparent at wider apertures (F1.4, F2) or when using mirrorless cameras with electronic viewfinders (EVF) for focusing.
2. Loose Lens Cap or Accidental Aperture Ring Movement
Ensure the lens cap is securely attached when not in use. If the aperture ring moves unintentionally, exercise care during handling. This is typically a mechanical characteristic and not a defect.
