  • Auto Mode: The camera automatically sets all parameters for optimal results.
  • Program (P) Mode: The camera sets the aperture and shutter speed, but you can adjust other settings like ISO and white balance.
  • Scene Modes: Pre-set modes for specific situations (e.g., Portrait, Landscape, Night Snapshot) to optimize settings for common scenarios.

3. Zoom Function

The PowerShot SD850 IS features a 4x optical zoom and a 4x digital zoom. Use the zoom lever (typically around the shutter button) to adjust the focal length.

  • Optical Zoom: Provides high-quality magnification without loss of image detail.
  • Digital Zoom: Further magnifies the image digitally, which may result in some loss of image quality.

4. Flash Settings

The built-in flash can be configured for various lighting conditions:

  • Auto: The camera automatically determines if flash is needed.
  • On: Flash fires with every shot.
  • Off: Flash is disabled.
  • Slow Synch: Used for night portraits or scenes with ambient light, synchronizing flash with a slow shutter speed.
  • Rear Curtain Synch: Flash fires just before the shutter closes, creating natural-looking light trails behind moving subjects.

5. Video Recording

The camera supports video recording in MP4 format with a resolution of 480p. To record a video, switch the camera to video mode (if available via a dedicated button or mode dial) and press the shutter button to start/stop recording. Playback and Review

After capturing images or videos, you can review them on the camera's 2.5-inch PureColor LCD screen. Use the playback button (often labeled with a play icon) to enter playback mode. Navigate through your media using the directional buttons.

2. Direct Printing

The camera features a Print/Share Button for easy direct printing to compatible printers. Connect the camera directly to a PictBridge-compatible printer using the USB cable and follow the on-screen instructions on the camera to select and print images.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning the Lens: Use a soft, lint-free cloth or a lens brush to gently remove dust and smudges. Avoid touching the lens with your fingers.
  • Cleaning the Camera Body: Wipe the camera body with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water. Do not use organic solvents or strong cleaning agents.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, remove the battery and store the camera in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your camera, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • "Lens Error, Restart Camera" Message: This error often indicates an issue with the lens mechanism. Try turning the camera off and on again. If the problem persists, ensure no obstructions are preventing the lens from extending or retracting. If the issue continues, professional service may be required.
  • Camera Does Not Power On: Check if the battery is correctly inserted and fully charged. If using an older battery, its capacity may have diminished, requiring replacement.
  • Images Are Blurry: Ensure the camera is held steady during shooting. Check if the Image Stabilizer is active. In low light, increase ISO sensitivity or use the flash. Clean the lens if smudges are present.
  • Memory Card Error: Ensure the memory card is correctly inserted and not damaged. Try formatting the card (this will erase all data) or using a different compatible memory card.
  • Flash Not Firing: Check the flash settings to ensure it is not set to "Off." Ensure the subject is within the effective flash range.
