Operating Instructions

Sharpening Straight Edges (Carbide & Ceramic Slots)

  1. Coarse Sharpening (Carbide Slot): For very dull or damaged blades, use the "COARSE" carbide slot. Place the heel of the blade into the slot at a 90-degree angle to the sharpener. Pull the blade through the slot from heel to tip, applying moderate downward pressure. Repeat 3-5 times or until the blade feels sharper. Always pull the blade in one direction, never back and forth.
  2. Fine Sharpening (Ceramic Slot): For maintaining a sharp edge or refining an edge after coarse sharpening, use the "FINE" ceramic slot. Place the heel of the blade into the slot and pull through from heel to tip with light, even pressure. Repeat 5-7 times. This step polishes the edge for a razor-sharp finish. Always pull the blade in one direction, never back and forth.

Sharpening Serrated Edges (Diamond-Coated Rod)

The fold-out, tapered round diamond-coated rod is designed for sharpening serrated blades, small gut hooks, and fish hooks.

  1. Extend the diamond-coated rod by pulling it out from the sharpener body.
  2. Match the tapered shape of the rod to the serration you wish to sharpen.
  3. Place the rod into each serration and move it back and forth gently, following the angle of the serration.
  4. Repeat for each serration until the desired sharpness is achieved.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and effectiveness of your Smith's PP1 Pocket Pal:

  • After each use, clean the sharpening slots and diamond rod with a damp cloth or soft brush to remove metal filings.
  • The carbide and ceramic stones are reversible and replaceable. If the sharpening performance diminishes, you can reverse the stones or replace them with new ones (sold separately). Refer to the product packaging or Smith's website for replacement instructions.
  • Store the sharpener in a dry place to prevent rust or corrosion.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Smith's PP1 Pocket Pal:

  • Blade not sharpening: Ensure you are using the correct slot (coarse for dull, fine for maintenance) and applying appropriate pressure. Verify that the sharpening elements are not worn out; if so, consider reversing or replacing them.
  • Uneven edge: Ensure consistent pressure and angle throughout the sharpening stroke. Practice with an old knife to refine your technique.
  • Sharpener slipping: Always use the sharpener on a stable, non-slip surface or maintain a firm grip.
