Tools Required

  • GE Silicone II Window & Door Sealant
  • Caulk Gun (if using larger cartridge, not needed for 2.8 oz squeeze tube)
  • Utility Knife or Painter's Multi-Tool (for removing old sealant and cutting nozzle)
  • Mineral Spirits (for cleaning excess sealant)
  • Soap & Water (for surface cleaning)
  • Caulk Smoothing Tool or gloved finger
  • Gloves (latex or similar protective gloves)
  • Dampened, disposable washcloth

Preparation

  1. Remove Old Sealant: Ensure all old sealant is removed from the work area. This typically requires cutting, scraping, or chipping away the old material using a utility knife or painter's multi-tool.
  2. Clean Surface: Thoroughly clean the area with soap and water. Wipe away any excess water or moisture. The surface must be clean, dry, and free of grease, oil, or loose particles for optimal adhesion.

Application

  1. Cut Nozzle: For larger tubes, use the spout cutter built into your caulk gun to cut the nozzle of the tube at an angle to the desired bead size. For squeeze tubes, cut the tip with a utility knife.
  2. Pierce Inner Seal: For larger tubes, use the seal punch on your caulk gun to pierce the inner seal located inside the tube. Note: Only silicone products require you to pierce the seal. Squeeze tubes typically do not have an inner seal that needs piercing.
  3. Apply Sealant: Hold the tube or gun at an angle and squeeze with even and consistent pressure to control the rate at which the sealant leaves the tube. Apply a continuous bead into the joint.
  4. Smooth Sealant: Within 2 to 5 minutes of finishing, use a gloved finger or a caulk smoothing tool to smooth the sealant into the joint. This ensures good contact and a clean finish.
  5. Wipe Away Excess: Before the sealant cures, wipe away all excess sealant on the surface of your work area with a dampened, disposable washcloth. For any cured excess silicone, mineral spirits can be used for removal.
