IDEAL Industries 62-140 TraceTone Tone and Probe Kit Instruction Manual

Model: 62-140

1. Introduction

The IDEAL Industries 62-140 TraceTone Tone and Probe Kit is designed for identifying and tracing de-energized low-voltage cables. This kit is suitable for installers who need to locate copper cables such as electrical, speaker, and alarm wires within existing installations. The kit includes a tone generator and an amplifier probe, which are designed for convenient storage by fitting together.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: Always ensure that cables are DE-ENERGIZED before connecting the tone generator or performing any tracing operations. Contact with live electrical circuits can result in serious injury or death. This device is intended for use on de-energized circuits only.

  • Do not use this kit on live electrical circuits.
  • Inspect the kit components for any damage before each use.
  • Keep the device dry and clean.
  • Store in a safe place away from children.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all items listed below are included in your package:

  • 1 x TraceTone Tone Generator
  • 1 x TraceTone Amplifier Probe
  • 1 x RJ-11 Alligator Clip Cable Assembly
  • 1 x RJ-11 Cable Assembly

  • Tone Generator: Emits a signal onto the cable. Features an RJ-11 jack and connections for alligator clips. Includes a two-tone selectable switch and a tone indication light.
  • Amplifier Probe: Detects the signal emitted by the tone generator. Features an adjustable volume control, an amplified speaker, and a conductive probe tip.
  • RJ-11 Alligator Clip Cable Assembly: Used to connect the tone generator to individual wires or non-RJ-11 connections.
  • RJ-11 Cable Assembly: Used to connect the tone generator to RJ-11 wall jacks or patch panels.

5. Setup

Before operation, ensure the tone generator is properly connected to the cable you wish to trace.

5.1 Connecting the Tone Generator

  1. Ensure the cable is de-energized: Confirm that the cable or circuit you intend to test has no active power.
  2. Select connection method:
    • For RJ-11 jacks: Plug the RJ-11 cable assembly into the tone generator's RJ-11 jack, then plug the other end into the wall jack or patch panel port.
    • For individual wires or non-RJ-11 connections: Plug the RJ-11 alligator clip cable assembly into the tone generator's RJ-11 jack. Connect the red alligator clip to one conductor and the green alligator clip to another conductor of the de-energized cable.
  3. Activate the Tone Generator: Turn on the tone generator. The tone indication light should illuminate. You can select between two distinct tone patterns using the switch on the generator.

6. Operation

Once the tone generator is connected and active, use the amplifier probe to trace the cable.

6.1 Tracing Cables with the Amplifier Probe

  1. Turn on the Amplifier Probe: Locate the On/Off button on the amplifier probe and press it to activate the device.
  2. Adjust Volume: Use the adjustable volume control on the probe to set a comfortable listening level.
  3. Scan for Signal: Hold the conductive probe tip near the suspected cable path. Move the probe along the cable's route. The amplified speaker will emit the tone generated by the tone generator when it detects the signal.
  4. Pinpoint the Cable: The tone will be loudest when the probe is directly over the cable carrying the signal. Use this to accurately identify the cable among a bundle or trace its path through walls or conduits.
  5. Identify Specific Wires: For individual wire identification, place the probe tip directly on the insulated wire. The tone will be strongest on the wire connected to the tone generator.

6.2 Storage

For convenient storage, the tone generator is designed to fit into the base of the amplifier probe. This keeps both components together and protected when not in use.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the device with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the kit in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Ensure the tone generator and amplifier probe are turned off before storage.
  • Battery Replacement: (Note: Battery type not specified in product data. Refer to device markings for correct battery type and replacement instructions.)

8. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No tone from amplifier probe.Tone generator not on, low battery in generator, probe not on, low battery in probe, incorrect connection, cable is energized.Ensure tone generator is on and connected correctly. Check batteries in both units. Ensure cable is de-energized.
Weak or intermittent tone.Low battery, probe too far from cable, high interference, poor connection.Replace batteries. Move probe closer to the cable. Minimize sources of electrical interference. Ensure connections are secure.
Tone generator light not on.Tone generator not on, low or dead battery.Turn on the tone generator. Replace the battery.
