1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the safe and efficient use of your Proctor Silex 17150Y Iron and Vertical Steamer. This appliance is designed for ironing various fabrics and for vertical steaming of hanging garments. Please read all instructions carefully before use and retain this manual for future reference.

2. Important Safeguards

When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and/or injury to persons, including the following:

• Read all instructions.
• Use iron only for its intended use.
• To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not immerse the iron in water or other liquids.
• Always turn the iron OFF before plugging or unplugging from the electrical outlet. Never yank cord to disconnect from outlet; instead, grasp plug and pull to disconnect.
• Do not allow cord to touch hot surfaces. Let iron cool completely before putting away. Loop cord loosely around iron when storing.
• Always disconnect iron from electrical outlet when filling with water or emptying, and when not in use.
• Do not operate iron with a damaged cord or if the iron has been dropped or damaged. To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble the iron; take it to a qualified serviceman for examination and repair. Incorrect reassembly can cause a risk of electric shock when the iron is used.
• Close supervision is necessary for any appliance being used by or near children. Do not leave iron unattended while connected or on an ironing board.
• Burns can occur from touching hot metal parts, hot water, or steam. Use caution when you turn a steam iron upside down – there may be hot water in the reservoir.
• To avoid a circuit overload, do not operate another high-wattage appliance on the same circuit.
• If an extension cord is absolutely necessary, a 15-ampere cord should be used. Cords rated for less amperage can overheat. Care should be taken to arrange the cord so that it cannot be pulled or tripped over.

4. Setup

4.1 Before First Use

• Remove any labels or protective covers from the soleplate.
• Wipe the soleplate with a soft cloth to remove any residue.
• It is recommended to iron an old piece of fabric (e.g., a towel) for a few minutes to ensure no residue is transferred to your garments.

4.2 Filling the Water Tank

1. Ensure the iron is unplugged from the electrical outlet.
2. Set the Steam Control Dial to the DRY position.
3. Open the Water Fill Opening cover.
4. Using a measuring cup, slowly pour tap water into the water tank until it reaches the MAX fill line. Do not overfill.
5. Close the Water Fill Opening cover securely.

Note: For optimal performance and to prevent mineral buildup, distilled or demineralized water is recommended, especially in areas with hard water.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Dry Ironing

1. Ensure the water tank is empty or the Steam Control Dial is set to DRY.
2. Plug the iron into a standard electrical outlet.
3. Turn the Fabric Selector Dial to the desired temperature setting for your fabric (e.g., Synthetics, Silk/Wool, Cotton/Linen). Refer to garment care labels.
4. The Temperature Ready Light will illuminate, indicating the iron is heating. It will turn off when the selected temperature is reached.
5. Begin ironing.

5.2 Steam Ironing

1. Fill the water tank as described in Section 4.2.
2. Plug the iron into a standard electrical outlet.
3. Turn the Fabric Selector Dial to a steam-appropriate setting (typically Cotton/Linen or higher). Steam will not be produced at lower temperatures.
4. The Temperature Ready Light will illuminate. Once it turns off, the iron is ready.
5. Adjust the Steam Control Dial to the desired steam level.
6. Begin ironing.

5.3 Vertical Steaming

The vertical steam function allows you to remove wrinkles from hanging garments, drapes, or upholstery.

1. Fill the water tank as described in Section 4.2.
2. Plug the iron into a standard electrical outlet.
3. Turn the Fabric Selector Dial to the MAX temperature setting.
4. Allow the iron to heat until the Temperature Ready Light turns off.
5. Hold the iron in a vertical position, a few inches away from the fabric.
6. Press the BLAST button repeatedly to release bursts of steam.

5.4 Spray and Blast Functions

• Spray Button: Press this button to release a fine mist of water, useful for dampening stubborn wrinkles before ironing.
• Blast Button: Press this button for a powerful burst of steam, effective for deep wrinkles or vertical steaming. Ensure the iron is at a high temperature setting for optimal steam blast.

5.5 Automatic Shutoff

For safety, the iron is equipped with an automatic shutoff feature. If left unattended, the iron will automatically turn off after 1 hour. To reset and resume operation, press the RESET button located on the handle.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning the Soleplate

• Ensure the iron is unplugged and completely cool.
• Wipe the soleplate with a damp cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner if necessary.
• Do not use harsh scouring pads or metallic cleaners, as these can scratch the nonstick coating.

6.2 Descaling (Mineral Buildup Removal)

Over time, mineral deposits from tap water can accumulate in the steam vents. To descale:

1. Fill the water tank with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water.
2. Plug in the iron and set the Fabric Selector Dial to MAX.
3. Once hot, hold the iron horizontally over a sink or old towel.
4. Press the BLAST button repeatedly until the water tank is empty. This will flush out mineral deposits.
5. Repeat the process with clean water to rinse the internal components.
6. Perform this cleaning monthly or as needed, depending on water hardness.

6.3 Storage

• Always unplug the iron and allow it to cool completely before storing.
• Empty any remaining water from the tank.
• Store the iron upright on its heel rest to prevent soleplate damage.
• Wrap the power cord loosely around the iron.
